I should get off my GUI butt and really learn linux and no better time than now.

I have a nice new AMD 64 x2

What distro is best for this CPU.

Cheers

apparently helix didn't read the subject line...

what you are really asking is "what's a good linux distro to start out on," since all major distros that I know of now support AMD64 just as well as x86. now, i expect you will find many answers to that question from the people here, but i'll go ahead and start the bidding with a suggestion for Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntulinux.org/). now interestingly, i haven't actually used it, but it's based on Debian (the distro I do use), and is a bit more up-to-date, and more user-friendly. I've heard nothing but good things about it.

another good way to try out linux without even installing it is Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.net), or one of the other so-called "live CDs" which allow you to run linux directly from a bootable CD/DVD, and don't need to overwrite your current OS. they are good for getting used to the system even if you aren't ready to or are unable to mess with your current partitions.

I've heard good things about Ubuntu too, might be time for me to try it out as well..

I'm sure the x2 will have been worth the wait Fozzie :) Can't go wrong with the A8N and those X300 video cards are pretty sweet too..

Lots of Ubuntu talk on News.com. Must be good if it got 3 or 4 news stories in the past 2 months. :)

Go Ubuntu!
