I would suggest reserving significantly less than the 10 billion recommended, in case you decide you don't want to do it. 1 billion only takes a few hours on my 1.75GHz Sempron, and that's all the time you need to get your feet wet.
Btw, if you want to know about how long a billion will take, it's 1,000,000 divided by your kp/s(which your sieving program will list).
