Version 5.2.2 of the BOINC client software has been released! See the BOINC website for details.

Does this mess up the optimized clients?

Yup! The boinc client anyway, since it goes to another version of boinc client, and has to be recompiled with the optimized cpu switches.

But it also doesn't mean that you have to change either. If you are running along just fine now and are happy, why change.......... unless the version you are running will be dropped by the specific project you are crunching.

If you don't care to compile yourself, just wait a bit, and someone will do it and put them up for grabs on the net.

I was over at the Rosetta forums and didn't see any thread regarding when they were going to phase out the version 4 clients.

I think we are still safe for now.

I am quite happy using the V4 clients.

If a project forces the use of 5 then it becomes a project i no longer contribute to.

I noticed that the a new 4.78 core was just pushed out too for Rosetta. Any idea what the major new features are of the 5.x stream?

Not much.

With version 5 folks can log in with a password.
For some reason the Seti folks feel this is a requirement. .:swear:

BTW
Application core versions have nothing to do with boinc versions.

So, does anyone have compiled the latest version of BOINC with optimized flags?

Any benchmarks?

Doubt it would be any different. V5 just has the additional password login piece, nothing else has changed I think..

I'll compile one and try it out though.

Anything on the compile Bok?

Are we safe in running the version 4 of BOINC for a while?

Latest BOINC version.

Recommended version 5.2.13

Now we all sit and wait for the optimized Linux version to come out.

If 5.2.13 is the latest "recommended" version, where does the 5.3.x optimized version come from? And which one should we be using?

If upgrading from 4.x to 5.x should I just upgrade over top or should I uninstall first?

I don't know where trux got the 5.3.1 number from to be honest, though I'm using the ones from here (http://www.guntec.de/Crunch3r/) now anyway.

To upgrade, simply run the installer and it will update over the old version. Then drop in the optimized version before running it.

Note that if you are using boincview, then 5.x.x has an additional file created which contains a password needed on boincview. It's in a file named gui_rpc_auth.cfg. Boinc generates a random password in there. Ijust change it to be something simple, then restart boinc.

The 5.3.1 is the 'development' version where the 5.2.13 is recommended (I assume) because it has been tested on the various platforms and is more stable etc.

Last weekend I ran a bit of comparison between a linux-optimized-compiled 5.2.12 and the 5.3.1: the integer times were almost the same. ( I dont think any two runs even using the same version are exactly the same. ) In fact, I had been using the 5.3.1 from earlier this month, then when I refreshed from CVS it pulled in new source code but left the version as 5.3.1. I had some trouble with that (newer) 5.3.1 where it sometimes did not respond to the standard kill and I had to kill -kill to stop boinc; that's when I fell back to 5.2.12.

I havent tried 5.2.13 yet.
