I read in a magazine recently that there is an open source project that was developed to run Windows programs without actually owning Windows. Does anyone know anything about this, where to get it, etc.?

Wine (http://www.winehq.com) does this on Linux.

While it's possible they were simply referring to this or something similar, I don't believe they mentioned Linux in the article.

Personally, I'd like an operating system which could run both Linux AND Windows stuff while sticking with Windows point-and-click. All the times I've tried to install Linux, I've hit hurdles that scared me and made me not want to finish the installation.

There is plenty of point and click in Linux, if that is what you like.

Download and burn a Knoppix CD. It'll use KDE (I prefer gnome), but then you can just book into Linux, with no install headaches (which really aren't that frequent these days, unless you have some pretty unusual hardware), and play around.

There are good Linux alternatives for most Windows programs, with the exception of complex commercial games.

But, if you are trying to install some ancient version of Red Hat on unusual hardware, yes, you'll have problems.
