I need your help. I'm connecting a third machine to my local network. How do I configure the IP's, gateways, DNS, etc.

Machine 1 - IP 192.168.0.1 (server) Win XP
Machine 2 - IP 192.168.0.2 Win Me

Machine 3 - IP 192.168.0.3 Win XP

I'm getting cable not connected. This is very annoying.
No, I am not increasing my farm.

using the win xp wizard you should not have to bother assigning ip or dns. just the ? how does it connect. try swapping the cable with another machine to see if there is a problem with the cable.

I can't swap the cables. The cable is small. Machine 3 is 20 m from Machine 1.
I don't understand your question "how does it connect".

go to control panel/network and internet connections/set up a home or office network/then a wizard will open and ask you questions. will show you examples of connections. such as connect directly to modem or through another computer. your switch is connected to machine 1?

I made all that. Yes, machine 1 is connect to the switch.
Going to try it once again.

Most routers have a DHCP function so allocate the IP info.

What do you get if you type ipconfig /all on the 3rd machine at a comand prompt?

If you get a 192.168.x.y address similar to your other machines then try and PING one of the other ones or better the default gateway address in your config info.

It may be an issue with the port on the router, so try another one, or the NIC check in device manager and disable/enable it.

Try and IPconfig /release and then renew.

A question, I'm sharing a folder so despite I don't have internet access I should see it from machine 3, right?

Fozzie, I don't have a router but I will try that IP thing. Just a minute.

is it connected to modem with all computers connecting directly to switch? or machine 1 connected to modem and switch connected to machine 1?

All machines are connected to the switch. Only machine 1 is connect to the modem (internal one).

It's the first time I'm trying to connect the machine so probably the lan card isn't working.

I'm going to make a break. Thank you all.

Does it have networking information this time ?

What does

ipconfig /all

give you now ?

Perhaps the nic is not recognized.

When I start the internet connection wizard I always get Lan card disconnected. So to keep going with the wizard I have to ignore the disconnected card but when I proceed I don't get nothing.
I just hope I didn't mess up my previous connection.
I hate this, this should be easy...

Carlos

EDIT: Maybe the problem is in the server.

In Control Panel->System->Device Managers is the network card showing as yellow with a problem ? I think you need to find updated drivers for it.

Which OS are you using?

No yellow flags. Server is running Win XP SP1 and the other one Win XP SP2. I think the problem is SP1, I saw something in the internet about it.

With the cables plugged in do you get lights on the NIC and the switch potr you plug it in to?

Do any of the machines you have in Start > connect to show all connections have a local area connection icon and is the status connected.

Check each of the BIOSes for the PCs and check that onboard LAN is enabled.

Check Device manager and make sure you have a Network adapters section and something is in there and hasn't got any problems.

Check IPCONFIG and start PINGing from each machine to the default gateway.

Does your switch provide DHCP? If not you might have to power the machines off and back up one by one so they don't cock up on auto config IPs.

Yes, I think so. I didn't check when the dual-core machine was on but give me a minute to connect it again. I have here a 20 m cable.

Status is desconnected.

Onboard LAN is enabled.

Check Device manager and make sure you have a Network adapters section and something is in there and hasn't got any problems.

Everything is ok. No yellow flags.

Check IPCONFIG and start PINGing from each machine to the default gateway.

Nothing happens.

I don't no.
I just connected again my Win Me machine and it's running. My problem is to share the internet connection between Win XP machines.

YES.

Fozzie

You have a WinME box connected to the Internet via a USB connected modem and also connected to a switch via ethernet.

If this is the case you shouldn't need any crossover cables as each machine should connect to the switch via a straight through cable.

em99010pepe

I have a WinMe box connected through crossover cables to a 5 port switch which is connected through crossover cables to my server machine.

Fozzie

cross overs could be your problem.

Should be straight through cables from switch to PCs.

em99010pepe
02-09-2006, 04:32 PM
I'm sorry, my mistake. I'm using CAT 5 cables (straight) not crossover.
Next test will be connecting the server to the machine, using the crossover cable and no switch.
I'm using the right cables, I was just changing names.
What I don't understand is that replacing machine 2 with 3 I should have internet access but I don't have. I can't even see the shared folders.

Machine 1 - AMD 64 3000+ (server, WinXP SP1)
Machine 2 - Athlon 1100Mhz (WinMe)
Machine 3 - AMD X2 3800+ (WinXP SP2)
