OK, guys and gals. New Free-DC sub team is launched. Name of new sub team is Free-DC Mercenaries. It came into existance from PM conversation Carlos and I have for a few days now.

Free-DC Mercenaries' main mission is to help Free-DC reach #1 place on as many DC projects as possible. We can say that we attack 1st places on behalf of Free-DC. Following our mission our goal is to build Free-DC Mercenaries fleet as big as possible. Every new box counts, and we hunt them actively.

First project that we will run is DPAD and we will crunch it until Free-DC reach #1 position. After that we will start looking for new project to attack #1 place for Free-DC.

That will be our style. Once we pick a project we crunch it until Free-DC reach #1 place on that project. After that we move on to the next project where our help is needed in attacking #1 position for Free-DC.

If you want to join Free-DC Mercenaries fleet in attacking 1st place at DPAD on behalf of Free-DC please use attached user.txt or enter in your user.txt following line...

Free-DC Mercenaries[Free-DC.org]

And don't forget the rule #1 - we do it because it's fun (and we want Free-DC to dominate the DC world). :)

Count me in.

I am unable to do auto or manual send. I will email my results.txt files
to Carlos on Saturday. As of this moment, one instance of DPAD has
balanced itself over all the cpus in the box with multiple threads running
on their own. This box has over 1meg of results.txt already.

The other box is about 1/2 meg results.txt. I expect it to kick itself to
take over the whole box shortly.

Stand by for a nice dump this weekend.

Chuck

PS: Let's see if the siggy works ok.

Thanks all for the welcome!

Thanks Merlin for jumping in and helping.

If I can find replacement fans for my CPU case (ANTEC 4U22ATXEPS-550),
I would have more processors to load up.

If anyone knows where I can find the 12VDC, 0.45A, DF1208BA-3 ('-3' is important for some reason) I would be GREATLY appreciative. I could
bring 2 Opteron 2.56Ghz machines into play.

ANTEC customer support tells me to check their 'Antec Store' page. None of
those fans push more than 40 CFM. The OEM case fans (2 in the rear, 80x80x25mm) push a LOT of air and are made by 'Top Motor'. The 'Top Motor' versions used by Antec in manufacturing are something special and *very* high volume, yet extremely quiet. The Antec fans just don't match up to the performance in any way and I can't find a source for single unit quantity purchases (end user) for Top Motor. They seem to sell in 500 unit blocks only. I want only 4 fans (I want 2 as spare)

Suggestions?

(sorry for being slightly off-topic.. Please PM/email me if anyone has a source)

Tnx,
C.

I can't upload results.... sending 2.3M to Carlos to upload.

I can get updates from the site.

Tomorrow I will see if the special instructions I got for a public-IP addy
work. If so, I will try auto-update.

Recv has always been fine... sending (the windows ftp program is dumb)
has been the problem. SmartFTP works just fine, but not scriptable into
DPAD.

Carlos: Thank you!!!!!

Thanks all, but I'm just doing my part.

I also should have left the machine alone to do more.
My hobby is music and I am using my music machine to run DPAD.

I'm trying to get my next CD done before this coming weekend
(I get my new car in Pa and get to drive it back to Texas!!!!!),
so I am using up a bit of DPAD's cpu time.

Yes, I'm excited... It's rare to get a Euro-package volvo in the US.
I got lucky 2 of 3 times. :)

Anyway... I will leave DPAD alone now for a bit. It just started
a new test 'DecayRotA' (?) in addition to the 'DecayRot' ?

That make sense???

Anyway, let's see what the point-meister has to say about our points.

Also, I see the stats have a misspelling... can that be corrected &
credited to us as intended?

Later all. Have a great day. I'm back to snooze for a few hours. :)

I cannot use auto-sending. I have to use the manual send function. Then the servers.csv downloads for me.........

Try manual sending.......

Bok
03-04-2006, 10:23 AM
I just use manualsend to create the .bin files, then stop it once the ftp starts as it won't work for me, then I copy the .bin files over linux and use ncftp...

ARGH.... I just got my public IP addy, tried to do a send
and got a '500 Illegal port' command....the script barfed.... and I lost all the results.txt.
(I lost a full day's run on the Opterons (about 500K)). :(

The data is still in the 'results.dat' file, but that isn't enough
data if I understand correctly.

Anything we can do to get this thing stablized or write our own
script(s) to send?

Merlin45
03-04-2006, 08:54 PM
The results are not lost......

They go into a different type of file, dont remember what it is called. But all you have to do is rename the file back to results.txt

Just look for the longest file name with the text doc ending. That will most likely be the file to be renamed. Dont use the results.dat file, not the one.

To make sure, open the file to see if it shows the results text, will look like something like this

tantalumrodr=000;tantalumrodz=595;d10l=001;d11l=000;d12l=000;d13l=0

If that file contains it, just rename the file back to results.txt

It will resend next reconnect.......

Chuck
03-04-2006, 10:49 PM
Merlin,
Thanks for the info, but that is the file I looked for. The send process creates (as I see it) a .bin and a .txt constructed of a unique ID and the User.txt. Somehow, DPAD ftp script thought the file was sent and deleted the .txt. I managed to recover the .bin file intact. The .txt file was not intact and therefore unrecoverable. That is all I have.

Can the .bin be sent via email to Dr Brooks and converted back / used in conjunction with the results.dat (where there is data), or does someone understand the .bin format? Perhaps he has a 'decoder'?

Also, If this is just too much fuss for 18 hours of processing, please just say so and I'll drop it. I simply am asking because there has to be more of us who encounter problems and lose data in spite of the fact DPAD is a VERY stable program. It would be nice to have some tools/procedure(s) for us to use when things go bad. The only weakness I see is the FTP process. Perhaps a http 'post' process instead?

Tnx,
Chuck

LAURENU2

I think the file would be some thing like this if you have it:swear:

Good luck

That's pretty close... except 'Free-DC Mercenaries[Free-DC.org]'

(same filename) is gone.

I guess an email is appropriate at this point to see what to do,
if anything can be done, otherwise, I'll just let it go.

Sorry you may have lost results... as it is the MOST annoying thing in the world as I used to find with FAD, I now always backup my work before sending. Quick copy of results.txt saves the day when the manualsend.bat fails :)

I think the others are right though, with that .bin file you may be able to recover some results... Foz may know how.

Will do. I will send the regular .txt to you as we previous arranged.
I will also drop back from the open/public IP because it interferes with
my VPN routers.

i will send my email later ... probably evening your local time. We'll
get another full day of points as a results !!

First place, HERE WE COME! :) :beep:

Bok,
Unless you pm/email me othersize, I'll send the .bin to Carlos to forward.

Future note: I will create a little program to put in the manual send .bat file that creates unique filenames and a 'sent results' folder to store them in for safe keeping. It will be transparent in manual send mode (I'll execute it before the 'muon -s' command). Once I have it fail proof, anyone that wants it is welcome to it. Thanks for the idea Meep!

You can do the same with the bin file, just edit it out with wordpad or another program, then paste it in you existing results file. Or just rename the bin file back to results.txt

All,
I have a question regarding DPAD configuration and how it impacts
the optimal performance.
I have two types of machines. The type 'A' machine has isolated
CPU <-> memory busses (dual channel & interleaved) for each CPU
with global memory as well. The type 'B' machine is also multi-cpu,
but has global L3 cache and truly 'NUMA' busses to memory where
each CPU can freely access the entire memory (8GB) independently
as 2 x dual-channel.

I refer to the ASUS and the new Tyan motherboards for AMD 940
pin configurations (ECC memory - all 2-2-2-5, providing 2-3-2-6
effective performance).

I currently have DPAD configured for 'auto' thread management for both.
Is this optimal for these configurations or should I trim them back to
running single threads per core?

My AMD-64 machines are configured for auto as well (754 and 939 pin).

The dual processsor machines typically run 8 threads per processor
which matches the 4 threads on the single processor machines.

So, I see '4' threads per core. I've read about running 1 thread for
each core, on a per-machine basis.

Final note: I see about 0.2% idle time in '4 thread per core' configuration.
I attribute this to task switching and memory bus contention. Correct?

Suggestions for optimum configuration / performance anyone?

Thanks,
Chuck

IronBits
03-06-2006, 12:54 AM
If you go single thread, you have to edit the config.txt
Threads (number or 'auto'): 1
Then make as many dirs and copies as you plan to run.
I did this on my dual cores and both procs were pegged nice and proper.
I didn't benchmark anything, but I think they ran better that way.
Plus everytime it finishes a wu or stops to send etc. the other ones keep running, so I'm sure it's more effecient that way.
Plus if one of the threads borks and crashes, the others keep ticking...

Chuck

cool.

thanks!

I will try it and also benchmark it. I will report back to the thread.

Download page:

http://www.stephenbrooks.org/muon1/

Windows Client:

http://www.stephenbrooks.org/muon1/v442c.rar
http://www.stephenbrooks.org/muon1/v442c.zip

Setup the client:

1º - Extract the files into a folder
2º - Create a user.txt file with notepad and add the following line:

Free-DC Mercenaries[Free-DC.org]

or download attachment.

3º - Open config.txt and setup the client options.

Resolution (XxY or 'auto'): auto
Priority for background running ([N]ormal, [L]ow, ackground): [b]B
Threads (number or 'auto'): auto
Auto-send results ([Y]es, [N]o): N
Auto-save interval (seconds; 0 for no save): 240
Rechecks for best-so-far results (min. 5): 5
Use passive (PASV) mode for FTP transfers: N
Download sample results file after a number of days (0=don't): 3
Sample file URL: http://stephenbrooks.org/muon1/samplefiles/{lattice}_100.txt
FTP command call: ftp -s:script.ftp
Update lattice files from web every N hours (0=don't): 12
Use old FTP calling method (as pre-v4.34; can hang, but more compatible with ZoneAlarm): N
TrialType ratios: Mutate=3;Crossover=3;Interpolate=3;Extrapolate=3;MuSpherical=3;MuOne=3;Extreme=1;LocalGrad=3;TopoSmo oth=2;
Particles per extra thread (limits threading overhead): 100

4º - Run the client using muon1_cmdline.bat or muon1_background.exe. First one will run it under a DOS box and the last one hidden, check taskmanager.

5º - If you have auto-send results off you have to send them manually using manualsend.bat. Don't need to kill muon1_background.exe.
The results are recorded in a file called results.txt.

6º - If you get trouble sending the results do not delete those 20060101-442562-fgtht-Free-DC Mercenaries[Free-DC.org].txt files. Rename them to results.txt. The server might be down.

7º - Stats pages:

http://www.stephenbrooks.org/muon1/?hide=1&teams=1
http://stats.free-dc.org/new/teamstats.php?proj=dpad&team=Free-DC.org

8º - Have fun!

am getting is NOT due to the multi-thread. The cores are
handling 4 threads each just fine. It's the OS overhead
of my LAN and filesharing. LOL. It took a long time to
catch it, but we have the good old LANMAN protocol
to thank. Thanks to everyone for the input.

What do you all think of an Avatar for us to use on projects that
reflects Free-DC, tailored for use by us and adaptable for other sub-teams
as well as Free-DC in general?

Anyone have a) an opinion b) if sufficient desire, and artistic talents
to pull it off?

Chuck I think it's an excellent idea. I would love to help but I don't have any artistic skill. 2 year old child graw better than me.

Anyone else?

Gang,
Just sent off another batch (2100K) to be uploaded.

Looks like more points in this set, but not certain.
We'll have to wait and see for certain, but the MPTS
values are higher than last time.

C.

Yes, I said I was going to wait, but what-they-hey....
Points are points!!! :)

Got the email. I will upload them on Saturday.

Thanks!!!

To all: It turns out the muon executable keeps loading any unsent
results into memory and keeps (I think) it in the autosave file... that
has a big impact on performance. I watched the Page Fault continue
to increase and the thread count continue to decrease as the file size
increased.

I'ld love to figure out how to get absolute maximum points out of this
apparantly well written program. The balance between threads, results.txt
records, and 'extra points per thread' is an interesting experiment. :)

This little beauty has a wonderfull 'mind of its own'... never running quite
exactly the same on any two machines. :) Indeed clever and my compliments to the author. :)

Chuck,

I'm in my lunch break so I just checked how much you have on your results txt files. Nothing more than 200840,8 Mpts. My work machine has 35416.5 Mpts and my home machine ~50000Mpts.

What about writing a linux client?

Well, I have 2 machines that seem to hate Boinc. Guess I'll try moving them to DPAD for the Mercenaries :hifi:

I may have just gotten one of them going on DPAD we shall see!

All,
Just returned from Pennsylvania. New car in hands.

PC's had shut down due to storms (hail/tornados/etc) through
this region.

I will ship my data for posting as soon as the HD's all get done
with chkdsk & restore.... they took a HARD hit.

C.

PS: Brought back another processor w/ 2-2-2-5 RAM &
a CL 2.5 RAM upgrade for the an existing machine.

Built a new 754 machine over the weekend as well.

Have extra 2-2-2-5 ram (Corsair non-ecc) for the 3700+ now.
That will be online and contributing ASAP.

This will effectively add 2 FAST processors.. Almost as good as
dualies or X2's. :)

Total CPU cores adding will be 3 (2 @ 2.4, 1 @ 2.8)

Ok all you DPAD experts :) ,

I have a noob question.......... AGAIN (LOL)

What is a 'queue.txt' file and why do I have this at the bottom???

1.530616,1.483618,1.410641,1.465783 (2014.8 Mpts) [v4.42c] {D4A5FC927B3AE4319B1399D7} <ChicaneLinacB>

Is it onto something significant? It has been running for MANY hours now and seems to be updating the 'results.txt' file every 5 hours or so.

C.

PS: I looked for answers on the web site and found nothing, but did notice that there are *STILL* 2 different spellings of Free-DC Mercenaries. Can we get the name corrected (on the server) and the points moved? May I also ask the Mercenaries to check the spelling of their team name in 'user.txt' ?

The accounts can't be merged until we all check our nodes and correct the wrong ones.

Dumped already a few results:

20060317-184531 7 results sent to muon.veneration.com.au (Carlos)
20060317-184603 191 results sent to muon.veneration.com.au (Carlos)

I found a way, maybe only temp, to 'auto dump' myself.
So, for now, I am letting DPAD auto-send / auto-update.

I found a better config for my machines. As soon as I am sure
of the performance, I will share with all.

Let's see if we can get under 100 days to overtake Anandtech today!!!!

DPAD is not a BOINC project. Don't tell anyone but I hate BOINC. The old projects are more stable...

Attention: new download link: http://stephenbrooks.org/muon1/v443.rar

Dumping is when you buffer results and send them in big scale, just to crash the server, hehe!!
Despite my bad english I'm trying my best to answer all your questions.
