Has anyone else noticed a substantial difference between using text client on Windows and on Linux? It appears that Windows is running 10 times as fast. I'm so used to Linux besting Windows 100 to 1!!

I can't figure out what the problem is which is irritating me highly.

Windoze98 HD=13g total; 6.5 used

Linux Mandrake 2.4.18-6mdk Intel Celeron, 128 cache 27 g free
using RH7.1

Trying to improve speed
I edited foldit file in Linux
priority -p -15
firewall -i f
buffer -df

What am I doing wrong?

What client are you using? The gcc compiled client is "much" slower than the Intel compiled version.

If you run the Intel compiled version, your performance should be at least as good as on Windows!

I'm using RH 7.1 - Intel compiler

I'm running measured 12% faster on Linux (intel compile) to Windows 2000 Pro on identical XP1800+/512 - RH 7.1 w/2.4.17 Kernel - the gcc compile is nearly identical to the windows speeds.

Same thing at home - Linux is running far slower.

This Linux is old 4 or 5 years - compaq crashed windoze I switched to linux after putting in a 40g hd. It's a cyrix i686

The windows here is an XP Intel 40g

I started the windows 8 minutes after the Linux. Linux has produced 41 - Windows 186

Wonder if it has anything to do with the distribution - Mandrake 8.2?

Thanks for any and all info. I write mysteries but I hate dealing with them in RL. :help:

Well i will take a wild guess and say it's the cpu that you are using on the Linux box, and the cpu on the windows box. That is if what you have posted is correct.

Prehaps you're running an i386 kernel on the linux side an a 586 extended on the windows side? That could account for a significant amount.

Also, what does ps -guax show on the linux side - are there a bunch of other processes running around?

cat,
if we don't know what hardware (CPU and RAM) you were running on each OS we can't tell much. If you compare the speeds, do them on the same computer.

You wrote that you are using a cyrix CPU. Cyrix/VIA are known to have a very slow FPU and so they have the worst times in most DC projects compared to the clock frequency.

Thanks for all your responses. There is a huge difference in RAM on my home computers, etc., so that's understandable.

As for the work computers, what's causing the difference is irrelevant now that I've decided to un-install the software (see FBI post) :spank:
