Well I've finally made my return to DF. The client has improved enough that I'd call it stable. That just means that I control it via scripts on 100+ systems. The main problem I'm having now is the Solaris client. I'm not sure if it's the OS or the hardware. In the early versions the Solaris client seemed to be faster then the windows on a I386 system with the same processor speed. With the new client it's slower. Is there any chance of getting a 64bit version? Also is there any thing that can be done to better use the 4MB of cache the Sun systems have?

have you been told about the -rt switch?

A thread from Brian the fist
http://www.free-dc.org/forum/showthread.php3?s=&threadid=1223

(from the readmefirst file)
Making it run faster
--------------------
The software can be made to run roughly twice as fast, at the cost of using
more memory. Normally the software uses about 25MB RAM while running, but
if you add the '-rt' option to the foldit script, the client will then use
up to 150MB RAM, but run twice as fast. Make sure you have enough free
RAM (and NOT virtual memory) before using this option or you will not benefit
from the speed improvement. For the same effect with the Screensaver, simply
select the 'use more RAM' option in the Configuration Dialog Box. If you
are running the Windows NT/2000/XP service mode of the client, edit the
service.cfg file (you may have to /remove and then /install the service if
this file is missing in your folding directory). The service.cfg normally
contains a single line with a number (to tell it whether it is copy #1 or
copy #2 of the service). Add a second line to this file with the text
'useram=1' (without the quotes) in order to tell the service to use up to
150MB RAM as well.

While Im not certain that compiling it in 64-bit on Solaris would make it much faster, the real problem is our SunWorkshop only builds 32-bit apps. We need to 'upgrade' to get a compiler that can build 64-bit apps. And of course, being Sun, the compiler is prohibitively expensive for us. So the short answer is, no 64-Bit solaris build unless we get our hands on a newer compiler. (And I'm guessing Sun cc is significantly better than gcc).

Glad to have another 'heavy-hitter' on board ;)

Woo hoo! I had noticed your return, and welcome back guru. Hopefully my bit of taunting didn't hurt too bad...
