I have been having MOBO problems for the last year and I though that Over Clocking my farm and running 100%,24/7 was the major cause of the problem. I have discovered problems on two MOBO's that were not OC'ed and still failed.

The first problems I encountered were all related to a Abit VP6 that was using p3 700's @ 980. This link explains the problems and has pictures to the bad cap's.

For the last 2 months I have been having boot problems with an Abit VT6x4 MOBO. Last night I was about to throw the MOBO into the trash when I decided to examine the board once more. I was suprised to see that the power supply section of the board had the same exact cap problem! This MOBO has never had its CPU voltage boosted as the p3 700@980 ran rock solid at stock voltage. This morning I replaced all the swollen caps and I am happy to report that its running fine again.

I have an old PII board, that died, and was never OC'ed in anyway. I pulled it off the shelf and found that all of its power supply caps were ALSO swollen and I suspect that If I were to replace them the board would fuction again.

4 MOBO's, two different companies and three different designs all having the same problem, Bad Power Caps! I think I see a trend :D

Is anyone else having problems?

Is this a design flaw or a result of hard use? I know the PII board was not used that much but my other boards are all in heavy duty use.

I have had two other VT6x4 boards fail in the last year. I didn't think, or know, to check them for this problem. Because they both suffered the same type of boot problems and odd behavior I am sure they also suffered from bad caps.

I have repaired 3 of my failed Mobo's now. They all have suffered from bad caps and I am becoming quite good at component level MOBO repair :D

As farmers do we need to stay away from ABit Mobo's OR is this problem a wide spread defect?

IF you have a MOBO failure check for swollen cap's before you toss it. It might be repairable!

Had never heard of this problem before you mentioned it in that other thread, where you showed the repair work. I don't have any Abits, but I'll take a look at some of my pharm. Thanks for the good detective work! Might save me a board. :)

I think FoBoT's in the repair biz. Maybe he can shed some light on this.
