If anyone is truly interested in Free-DC making it to the 3rd podium position, NOW is the time to kick it in high gear.

Even if it means giving up on the other projects we are working on, collectively, I truly believe we could do this if we can get EVERYONE to give OGR their full attention for a few months.

Do we care?
Should we be satisfied by taking one more rung in the ladder, giving us a 5th place finish in OGR25, for all eternity?
Shall we FIGHT for it?

What say you, my team mates of Free-DC?

1) Dutch Power Cows - 2,282,308,898
2) BugTraq.Ru - 1,518,622,126
3) Ars Technica - 551,454,208
4) Distributed Amiga - 550,453,057
5) Team Warped (OS/2) - 467,897,592
6) Free-DC - 448,500,128

If we're talking about taking the spot from Ars then I'm all in.

I can only bring ~10T per day plus periodic 25 stub dumps from a borged box. It all helps though!

I'll wait to see the general consensus from this thread before I move. If we don't have the power and enthusiasm to give them trouble then I'd rather stay with Rosetta for now.

What's the word?

While I would love to help stomp Ars Technica, all of my boxes are limited to health/biology area.

Rosetta still seems to be the best project in that area so I'll hold the fort there.

Besides, there are evil COWS in front of us there just waiting to be RK

It takes a team effort to RK any team :Pokes: Thats how TeAm AnandTech did us in Rose.
But I guess we are Free-DC:thumbs:So Good luck on your quest for Beef:cry:

If we are not willing to focus on OGR for the extended time period it would take, shall we all go back to Rosetta and be happy with what our score is in OGR?

Just trying to get a feel for what we, as a Team, would like to do so we can be somewhat focused and make plans... :)

It's not that I wouldn't help if I could (as I have shown many times in the past), but right now the only boxes I have access to HAVE to run health or biology projects or I can't use them. The person in charge of them really likes Rosetta

I don't have access to all the power I had in the past and I don't even have a home farm I could use right now.

I'll be rooting for Free-DC in any project and will try to help keep us close in Rosetta

So we do what we can on OGR till it finishes and shift to Rosetta
Folks already on Rosetta will be holding our position.

How long has OGR 25 got left to run ?
Do we have a realistic chance to get 3rd ?

IronBits
03-24-2008, 02:46 AM
Probably not with Ars having Front Page Coverage whenever they want/need it. :(
I see 4th as possible, but a very long push at current rates.
I think there is ~6 months or so until it's finished I heard.
My PS3s will stay put on OGR till the end, just in case Ars slips up. :D

I know I'll be glad when it's over so we can all get back to our HOME project of Rosetta.
So we can take back our Forth place position from TA, and go after them crazy folks over at XtremeSystems. :looney: :jester:

So
How long has OGR 25 got left to run ?
Do we have a realistic chance to get 3rd ?

Looking at the numbers to take #3rd it would take a FULL commitment from all of Free-DC
So I guess We will have to look at # 4Th
And I only have about a month left till I shut down :swear:to remodel so lets look for 4Th place:cheers:

WUs then it is full time, full on with OGR to the finish.

Should have a nice :dump: with the borgage running over the long Easter weekend, unless we have had a power outage which is unfortunately quite often where work is. Crap electrics in the building.

Okay, slightly weird question here:

Why on the DNet Stats page (http://stats.distributed.net/team/tlist.php?project_id=25&low=1&limit=100) is Distributed Amiga at #4, and Free-DC at #6, but on the Free-DC Stats (http://stats.free-dc.org/new/projpage.php?proj=ogr25) page is Distributed Amiga missing, and Free-DC has jumped a place?

Oh, and I'm enthused at a push in OGR :D

12 votes to keep going.
06 votes to stay where they are, thus holding down the fort the best they can until we get back.

So, we keep plugging away at OGR until the project is finished.
Then we go back to Rosetta and resume our efforts there, taking
TeAm AnandTech first, then, go after XtremeSystems . :D

There is a serious threat to our fourth place upcoming. Team linux-de.org (who for some reason aren't listed on the stats.free-dc.org pages) are outproducing us by more than 2.5million GNodes per day. MOOH!, their top producing has been accelerating see here (http://stats.distributed.net/participant/phistory.php?project_id=25&id=452991). At current rates (Free-DC just under 2M GNodes/day, MOOH! at 4.5M GNodes per day), linux-de.org will take fourth from us in just over 4 months.

I know Free-DCers work on whatever they like, it's part of the philosophy, but it'd be a terrible shame if the place we worked so hard for was to be snatched away in the last few months of the project.

paleseptember

The calculation wasn't mine :P

I'm *highly* skeptical on the project wrapping up in under three months. Looking at the detailed details available here (http://stats.distributed.net/project/ogr_status.php), and if you're hardcore, you can search the forums for the linky to the csv and xml for the last 6 months of history, well into next year.

*re-reads the-mk's post* Ah, you weren't actually quoting me. Oops.

[NGS]Cpt00Kirk
07-03-2008, 06:23 AM
The calculations are based on multiple nodes / stubs numbers and gives a date based on the work done for 1 week, 3 weeks and 9 weeks

all these different dates are now really compact and tell use that around 16 - 19 september it will be over.

But we have to see what happens, DPC is counting on these dates and we are now in de timeframe to see were everybody will go to after OGR.

 cu Free-DC and take the bronze, you truly earned it!

Bok
07-03-2008, 07:46 AM
Isn't it also based on the size of the stubs?

Because we are close to the end onf stubspace 6, where the large stubs are, it's expected that stubspace 7,8 & 9 are much smaller stubs, hence will be completed at a mugh higher rate..

All the current projects are based on average number of stubs completed, which in turn does take into effect that average stubsize might decrease rapidly.

At least that's how I've read it in various posts by dnet staff, so I think the projections by DPC are accurate.

And no, I don't think we'll make bronze unfortunately, not without some huge turnaround upwards by us and downwards by Ars (and that includes BlisteringSheep losing his borgage for Ars)

No, that isn't quite right. Stubspaces 8 and 9 (should) contain larger stubs, which will take longer to crunch. However, there are much fewer of them - these are smaller stubspaces (in terms of stubcount). I believe the fact that there are less stubs outweighs the fact that they are bigger, and this is why the project should accelerate in the latter stubspaces.

Basically, any predicted project end date that anyone comes up with is going to be highly speculative because we simply don't know how many nodes per stub. However, we can compare the size of stubs in different stubspaces relative to each other and then say "stubspace x contains more stubs, so it should take longer", or "stubspace y contains smaller stubs, so it should empty quicker".

Bok
07-03-2008, 10:02 AM
Right, I remember something about that. Given that stubspace 7 is by far the largest remaining though and that one is expected to be significantly smaller stubs isn't it ?

If we guesstimate that stubspaces 8 & 9 are similar to 6, then we get the following calculation

Time to complete stubspace 6 = 7M@220000 per day~ 32 days
Time to complete stubspace 8 = 11M@220000 per day ~ 50 days
Time to complete stubspace 9 = 375000@220000 per day ~ 2 days

So, it boils down to the time to finish stubspace 7.

If they are the same sizes, it would be an extra 221 days, if they are 5 times smaller on average it would be only 40days..

As you say though, all guess work :)
