View Full Version : an idea to get more members/recruiting

a site i like that gets some decent traffic has a deal to run a banner ad for $20 for 30,000 page views. i think that means the ad will get loaded 30,000 times, that of course could be a smaller number of people seeing it more than once. whatever

if someone will help write/create the ad (to get more DF members to crunch for us/keep us ahead of Ars), i will pay the $20

here is a link to the info

http://linuxiso.org/ads/signup.php

linuxiso.org - banner guidelines

Banner size and dimensions:

A banner must be 468 pixels wide by 60 pixels high or less. Total size of the banner must be 13KB or less. (The whole reason we are selling banners is to cover the costs of bandwidth).

Banner file type and animations:

Banners must be either jpg, gif, or png image formats. Animated gifs are acceptable. Flash swf files are not allowed.

Banner Content:

A banner must contain content that is considered rated "G" for all audiences. It can not display profane or insulting material. The website administrator has the final say in all banner submissions.

Link Content:

Your banner must not link to any site that is not accurately portrayed by your banner. The site that is linked to must not contain any pornographic, illegal material, sites engaged in libelous or harassing activities, sites that promote or utilize software or services designed to deliver unsolicited e-mail. Linking to a page that further redirects the user to a different site is also prohibited.

Use of impressions / Display of banners:

Each impression purchased is equal to one page view. Banners are displayed at the top of most linuxiso.org pages.

Duration and timeliness of banner campaign:

Currently we cannot limit a banner's run to a limited time scope. You must turn on or off your banner yourself. Site traffic can fluctuate so we cannot guarantee that all your impressions will be used during a specific time period. We cannot be held responsible for downtime or timeliness in delivery of your banner. However, you will not be penalized for any problems preventing the display of your banners. Your impressions do not expire and your banner will continue to run until all impressions are exhausted.

Is that the same Minister who doesn't run DF ?

I don't usually like banner ads, but go for it!

i don't like them either, but i have no other ideas on how we can get new members, we aren't like teams with a large pool of "non-Dc'ers" to try and recruit from "non-DC" forums

so our only options seem to be:

1- recruit from other teams. generally frowned upon and rarely works

2- get "new meat" from outside the "DC Community"

people that go to Linuxiso.org are generally open minded. DF has excellent OS support, as good or better than any DC project, so anybody that runs linux/* BSD or whatever can play

i dunno, maybe it will be a wasted $20, but I'll skip lunch 3 times and it will be a wash

Well, something BIG had better happen....

The limp noodle group has added 47.5 Million Units in the last 18 hours with 2 recruits from other teams.

Joined 3.0 hours Halon50 +36,261,620
Joined 15.0 hours Starslayer +11,303,653

They are now less than 50 Million Units behind...

I think the gloves are off for recruiting from other teams....

We at Ars have never, to my knowlege, deliberately recruited members of other teams. However if they want to switch we aren't going to stop them...

Ok, that tears it. I'm gonna have to see if I can't get mean.

I have a "box and a half" that doesn't DF currently, but I will see if I can't get it running. Also, I will see if I can't make the sched task on another machine start earlier and end later. Should help a *little*. I can't do much else, as I'm currently strapped for cash.

But we can't let them take the #1 spot from us. Dyy? I know you got more than you're currently showing us, and we're gonna need it. I know there's some others of you that aren't up to full potential. The reason Ars is beating us so bad is that they have more orange players, and for no other reason. So we need to get scrapping. I'm gonna see if I can't get to red (hopefully with these additions). I think we could get at least a 20% increase overall, shouldn't be too hard.

They're only beating us by 4-500k per update. Right now, that's only about 50 XP class processors... Can we find that?

we're doomed

I'll put $50 on my credit card if someone can do the ad.

I've done all I can do machine wise and I have no friends .. to recruit or otherwise :)

We do NOT recruit from other teams! As FoBoT stated, it's something you just don't do and it doesn't work either. Try to recruit from other teams and I bet you'll get flamed.

Furthermore, it's not a way I would like to win. I do not want to be on a team that only wins because you "stole" from the competing team.

The two new members have decided by themselves to join and I welcome them (as I to to all members joining) if they decide to stay.

Who knows if they'll stay? One of them is a former KWSN member - they are pretty known to do a lot of team jumping for fun...I don't know whether that is the case here, but I could imagine they could get a lot of fun out of jumping between Free-DC and TSF now when we are so close.

Besides that....the race to 3 billion continues ;) :moon: :rotfl:

PW - Settle down please. :p ;)
Now go on over there and stand in the corner for 5 minutes. :sleepy:
Moogie, keep and eye on him :rotfl:

Nobody is going to be breaking the GOLDEN rule around here.

Now back to the topic at hand...

If taking out a banner ad is what you guys wanna to do,
and, it will be on a site that does NOT already have a Team,
I say Go for it :D

I have to say that having people team jump is not the way I wanted to pass you.

Hopefully it is people who just wanted to join a different team (i.e. lack of activity on thier current team, etc.) and I say that not because we might then keep the production, but because I don't really want to be part of people goofing around.

Either way, you can't control who joins a team (as you guys know, especially with data, etc.) and you can't control when they leave, so the only thing left to do is to...

keep on crunching.

This battle is just warming up anyways. :)

Oh - those guys are just too much .. :swear:

Another one just landed at the ars limp noodle factory:

Joined 3.7 hours JFK and Howell Labs +71,758,920

and they would have us believe these members are just wandering in off the street?

Right, just like I believe in the tooth fairy and Santa Claus.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that there has NOT been any teamwide effort to recruit anyone. Why I can't completely rule out an individual on the team choosing to contact one of these individuals, I do know that the majority of the Team Stir Fry members wanted to gain the lead by outproducing you rather than team switching. I can say that Team Stir Fry does like being accused of lying Angus, particularly when it is coming from someone who pulled the sort of stunts that you did in our distributed computing forums!:swear:

Think what you want, we don't recruit from other teams. If you ask me, this is all a KWSN plot. But time will tell.

STOP!!! Now...
What is, is, what is, knock it off, keep it friendly.
If you can't find something nice to say, then don't say anything at all.
If it continues, I will delete the whole thread period.

Keep up the folding, do the best you can, and that's that. :)

There is more to it than meets the eyes here...

Ars is having an intermal Team Gauntlet at the moment.
This usually, but not always, causes folks to switch projects or even to switch Teams to help one side or the other...
But, it's always friendly...

Keep Folding everyone, let's see where the chips fall after the gauntlet ends :D
We are all brothers and sisters, together as one, for the good of all man/women kind.

Oh, here we go again. ;)

Here's what I think:

Dyyryath's Obviously Very Important Opinion (http://www.free-dc.org/forum/showthread.php3?s=&threadid=1541)

:D :D

BTW, just to address the ORIGINAL purpose of this thread...

I don't see anything wrong with banner ads, provided we weren't buying them on a site that already has a distributed computing community of their own. ;)
