Okay SetiUSA having stomped all over us in AI, well they are thinking the next project just might be Mag@Home so guys if we're ahead of 'em just let 'em slide on by - well MAYBE...

Magnetism is a REAL memory hog, so anyone should take care there. Make sure you have up to 1Gb per core....otherwise it starts swapping out like crazy. I had to stop running it on the majority of my systems due to that.

ya its sucks up the mem :(

have 4 gigs in the Q66

2 gigs of ddr3 in the Q9450

2 gigs ddr2 in the dualies

it stops the Q66 in its tracks lol thats with 4 gigs of pc 6400

and this is my main rig so cant run it here lol...

the 9450 handles it ok but its 100 % ABC till i hit 1 mill :)

Shouldn't it simply be a matter of changing your memory settings in BOINC?

Not if the application requires a certain amount of memory.

Why not just change your preferences to use only a certain number of processors for that project, rather than all 4 or 2 or whatever? Or is that a general preference which affects all your projects?

yes, its a general setting, though you could in theory put the pc's into a 'work' or 'school' group and do that.

I think I can guess what you mean. I have a quad-core with 2Gig of memory. I looked at it one day and it had two projects running, with two others listed as "Waiting for memory." Definitely sub-optimal, but I think I was accomplishing more with those two cores than if the machine was having to page data. :)

Yeah I could probably happily run Mag @ Home on my 1 core since I have 1.5Gb of mem, but if you wanted to run it full throttle on your quad you'd defiantly need to double your ram capacity.

i read it somewhere where the project admin wrote that

1 core could use upto 700mb of mem at one time.

not all the time but at certain times. on my Q66

it was using 1.65 gigs of mem with all 4 cores running.

plus i think it may have to do with vista 64(vista peroid) also why

my machine crawled to a halt being vista is a mem

hog also. :( cause the Q9450 was fine and running

xp pro 64 on it
