Come on guys we need more power on oGR if we are going to hold off until the end.

So stump up with some GHZ if you want us to hold onto this place.

Can we hold on until the end of September?

We had 30 members returning work yesterday (which is awesome!) We were a shade under 2million Gnodes for the day (the power is rising!)

If we keep powering on like this, we will stay ahead of linux-de.org and the power of Mooh! for six more weeks! That means 5th October. The history and estimates page (http://stats.distributed.net/project/ogr_status.php) is projecting some time in October. This is going to come down to the wire!

If you can put some power to it

If you have some boxes without interweb access, you can fetch and flush via email. A few more cycles will probably be enough to push us over the line.

GOOOO! FREE-DC!!!

PS. Edit for clarity. You can fetch and flush via email AND move the units onto the isolated computer. Sorry for confusionings.

the catch date has gone out to 39 days.

It was 38 yesterday so effectively our increased output has gained us 2 days.

If we could just hit 2.3 or even 2.5 that would really put us in with a good shout of ending this project with a place we have all fought for.

If you have anything running any other project see if you can just bring that power to bear, no matter waht, onto OGR for the next few weeks.

On the other hand, the current (1-day) projected end date is 02-Oct-2008. Other teams will speed up too, I guess. At least there is a sticky topic about that in the Rechenkraft.net forum (Yoyo@home).

Fozzie

OK the 5th of October

Looking at the completion schedule the 16th of October is the latest date based on the 30 day average.

So we need 11 days worth of extra power to delay our demise.

So the big question is who can find us 11days of extra production.

Looks like I'm going to have to run the laptop 24/7 and anything else i can get my hands on.

Can I ask a question? Where do people think that Mooh! is getting nearly 5 million GNodes-worth of power? My Q6600 averages .160GNode/s ~ 14,000 GNodes/day. You'd need several hundred quadcores to get Mooh!'s sort of output.

Which leads me to think he's sysadmin at a school or university, or something of that ilk. And...as school/university/education is returning soon-ish in the Northern Hemisphere, he's going to have to ease off the borgage...?

Is this a valid hypothesis?

Oh, and my take on the numbers.... We have a lead of 110 million. If linux-de.org encroach at 2.5 million/day (today's numbers), we hold out another 44 days. At 3 million/day (previous week or two's worth of numbers), we hold out another 37 days. The project projection page hasn't updated yet, but either number pushes us past the first week of October.

We can do this! Goooooo Free-DC!! (That bit was my take. The above calculation is just me waffling...!)

If the proxy is any indication, then there is a massive slowdown in stubs completed occurring now...

In the past 12 hours there has been ~ 1800 stubs completed compared to 2 days ago when 4000+ per hour were being completed. I'd expect the totals for today to be much less than the 3M+ of yesterday..

paleseptember
09-02-2008, 06:24 AM
@Fozzie: Agreed! Just because others might falter doesn't mean we should provide anything less than our best :D

@Bok: If you look at some of the history data here for example in csv format (http://thejet.statsdev.distributed.net/project/ogr_status_history.php?project_id=25&output_format=csv), otherwise here is also good (http://thejet.statsdev.distributed.net/project/ogr_status_history.php), you can see that the project slowed down incredibly on the days where it focused on the later subspaces.

Based on this, I really think that the ogr history page end estimates are a bit optimistic, even factoring in the confusion with the four-day stat jump.

Nevertheless, am away from computer for a week, I hope that when I get back we're still powering along towards the finish line!

24 days ahead of Mooh we need another 130k a day to push that out one extra day and that is the kind of margin that would mean the difference between 4th and 5th.

So come on guys forget all the other projects for just the next 3 weeks as this is really something worth pushing.

Can't believe this thread has gone on so long without:

"No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee..."

I, of course, have had the Metallica song in my head whenever I've read the thread :bonk: That it was a line from a Donne's Meditations didn't occur to me until just then :bang:

Well done to all 29 Free-DCers who returned work today. You all raaaawk!:music1:  :music1: (Though I am including myself in that number, so I guess it's 28 raaaawking members and myself :looney:)

The projections have snuck forward a few days to end-of-september rather than beginning-of-october, which is encouraging, though I reiterate my concern than stubspace 8 may be a bit tougher to speed through than the current numbers indicate (I'd back that up with some statistics if (a) I wasn't so tired (b) it wasn't so late (c) I hadn't slurped too much quite nice shiraz to make plotting regressions a futile task :looney:)

Nevertheless, we are still powering on as a team, and linux-de's (and Mooh!) overtake-date is standing at 27 days, which *should* be enough. But let's all give those numbers a shake and make it a certainty.

Go team! Go Free-DC! Let's show that we are a force to be reckoned with

Fozzie
09-12-2008, 09:09 AM
is that the completion date will stretch out to the 7th of October.

We should be still ahead of Mooh by then but we haven't got any margin for losing production.

I'm off on holiday next week so the work borgage might not produce over that time so I'll just be down to the home CPUs.

1. we are completing stubspace 7 with small WUs
2. we still have stubspace 8 and 9 to do which could have bigger WUs
3. linux-de.org (4M) and yoyo (7.5M) did a lot of GNodes yesterday!
could be a hard job keeping #4 ...

paleseptember
09-13-2008, 09:06 AM
Since the-mk used the \begin{enumerate} command, I think I shall too.

\item (1) Yes, sub-stub-space's 8 and 9 do appear to consist of significantly larger work-units, but the numbers indicate that if we (as a team(!)) maintain the pressure, we will hold the #4 position.

\item (2) Whilst linux-de.org and yoyo are having big days, don't forget that we have been contributing to this project for years! Our place at number 4 has been earned through major stick-to-it efforts by some truly fantastic members. We have fought and slogged and crunched and crunched for years to gain the place we have. We have earned that place and we deserve it. Let's not feel that just because yoyo and Mooh! can summon some firepower that we're not worthy. We're Free-DC! and proud of it!

\item (3) We had a big team effort today (last stats-time-unit-thingy). 32 members returned work, pushing us past a major milestone (700 million GNodes), and making us a force to be reckoned with, the majority of which was due to the team effort. We have some strong hitters (maefly, lauren, IB, Helix (highvoltz, even though you've disappeared) and co), but it's those who are giving it their all (not that you others aren't, don't get me wrong) that are pushing us towards the line. A big team-effort will propel us to the end :)

As a team, no one can possibly say we didn't give it our all, and fight to the last.

Even if we lose our place (which we won't!) it has been a magnificent effort by a great group of people.

 one and all :D

There is nothing we can do about that now.

If we hadn't had a splurge on SoB and concentrated on OGR for that month we would have held the place.

If we had all committed as a team we may have done it.

If Highvoltz had been able to stay on a little longer.

So many ifs but only one result.

Make his fight on the hill in the early day
Constant chill deep inside
Shouting gun, on they run through the endless grey
On the fight, for they are right, yes, by who's to say?
For a hill men would kill, why? they do not know
Suffered wounds test there their pride
Men of five, still alive through the raging glow
Gone insane from the pain that they surely know

Take a look to the sky just before you die
It is the last time you will
Blackened roar massive roar fills the crumbling sky
Shattered goal fills his soul with a ruthless cry
Stranger now, are his eyes, to this mystery
He hears the silence so loud
Crack of dawn, all is gone except the will to be
Now they will see what will be, blinded eyes to see

According to http://n0cgi.distributed.net/ogr-proxyinfo.html the Keymaster only got 15,718 stubs ready to send out (more is still buffered in the proxies). I know this value does not represent what he has on disk but in memory, but the value got significantly smaller during the last hour (usually, the value wasa at 50,000). Could this mean the Keymaster is running out of work yet?

Keymaster's empty now. The other keyserver buffer about 270,000 stubs as of now - usually less than one day's work.

For whom the bell tolls. Time marches on...

It's going to come down to who's got the largest cache of WUs.

and we could have a glimmer of a chance.

If the keyservers keep running out, which is possible then Mooh's production could go up and down more towards the end.

Anyways let's just keep up the pressure as much as we can.

We'll see what Mooh produces tomorrow, another low one we hope.

alpha
10-07-2008, 07:22 AM
It's MOOH's biggest drop in production since 4th September. Lot's of people on different forums have been reporting keyservers with no work so it looks like there's a good chance that was the cause.

As long as we're all hitting Bok's pproxy and it keeps a healthy supply of stubs we should be able to keep up our regular output. Bok, can you tell us if we still have a full cache?

I breached 4 Pnodes! It's a shame it happened on the same day we got passed though, that makes it kinda bitter sweet. I'm glad there was enough time for me to reach that milestone, I've really been pushing for it over the last few weeks.

I'll reiterate everyone elses comments - MOOH has done an awesome job with output as vast and as consistent as that, for so long. Whoever they are must have access to a heck of a lot of boxen. I wonder where (if anywhere) they'll go once OGR-25 is finished?

Looking at today's numbers, linux-de.org only outproduced us by 300K Gnodes. I think the randomness of the dnet keyservers is going to take a toll on Mooh!

Which means (deep breath!), maybe, just maybe, if we keep the pressure up and the free-dc proxy provides the work, we may be able to pull this back. Two days of near-dry servers... *shrug* Never say die.

Tumo is four days active and already contributed 38,000 GNodes - welcome!

Gopher is a little bit longer with us with nearly 200,000 GNodes - great effort!
it seems like Jason is back, contributed the last 3 days - welcome back!
kman1239 is supporting us the last two months - 450,000 GNodes - good work!
rcoulter, Petey and Paratima joined us about end of August/beginning of September, both did more than 700,000 GNodes!
