I am considering upgrading the processor in my desktop machine, which will give me an athlon xp 1700 to play with. If I do this I want to build a new linux box to crunch Dist. Folding on. Not going to be overclocking or anything, as I really don't want to screw with extra cooling (I wouldn't mind a quiet rig). that I am going to also install apache and a couple of other packages on so I can also use it as a test webserver for a couple of other projects I'm working on for work.

my question is: I know many of you have built these grand farms of machines and I would assume you have done so fairly inexpensively. any tips on what mainboard, etc. to go with? Heck even some tips on a cheap compact case would be appreciated. how about a reputable place to get a nice barebones rig to put the processor and some ram in.

Newegg.com (http://newegg.com) has good deals on new stuff

for used (even cheaper) stuff, i go to the For Sale/Trade forum at Anandtech (http://forums.anandtech.com/categories.cfm?catid=45)

i just sold a 1 Ghz duron there

Compgeeks (http://www.compgeeks.com) also sometimes has selected items for good deals, and they mark items that have been tested with linux
