headache -> embarrassing wrong URL; optimizing system

Rats! Splitting headache. Got distracted. Punched www.seventeen.com, 1st thing I saw read: "Got Pets?"
I was quite concerned for several seconds.

Back to business...

1) I have the option to start my cruncher in Linux w/ or w/o X, or in WinME.
I saw the benchmarks, but they're not coeteris paribus between different OSs. Is there any indication that an OS outguns the other, all else equal?

2) Any indication on optimal / minumum swap, under the various Linii and WinME?

I wrote SB and I don't even know for sure. ;)

I suspect the linux version may be faster, but i've never had someone test it for me. And I don't think it would be huge, but it may be a ~5% speed increase. If you try out multiple OSes on the same box, I can figure it out comparative performace from the log file to see which one is faster even if you use different n values. Let me know if you are interested in testing. :)
