View Full Version : Invalid page fault

Here's one for you guys - hopefully you can help.

Ever since the update last week, I've gotten an invalid page fault on the text client - not the screensaver. The message is:

Invalid page fault in foldtrajlite.exe at 017f:004afc48

I know these are normally memory-related, but I'm at my wits end. The screensaver runs fine - just slow as all get-out. It's only on the text client, and only since the latest update.

I've tried downloading the client fresh, with the same results.
Happens with or without dfGui.
Happens with high RAM mode and in normal.
Happens in both quiet and not-quiet modes.

System is a Compaq Presario 7470, AMD K6-2 (550 MHz?), 192 MB RAM, Win98 SE. Any help is most appreciated.

Thanks.

Is your ROM BIOS up-to-date? Most motherboard companies have an update-checker. Try that first.

You haven't got any "questionable" programs installed, do you? Like Gator, Comet Cursor, other spyware, crap like that? Normal Kazaa (i.e. not Kazaa Lite)? Maybe something someone else loaded up?

It's odd that the problem is just starting now, but it is 98SE after all, this kind of thing has been known to just start cropping up suddenly for no apparent reason...

Does that CPU fully support '686' or 'Pentium Pro' opcodes - recall the software is optimized for 686 and so since you have an older AMD it is possible that one of the optimizations doesnt work on your CPU. Just a guess, could be faulty hardware just as easily.
A few questions though, is the page fault always the same address? What is the cleint doing when it occurs (middle of structure, uploading, etc)? How long does it take until it happens? Does it happen EVERY time or seemingly at random?

Let's see - I upgraded the BIOS as far as Compaq has - will have to find out the MoBo maker to see about a more recent update.

No spyware. I run Ad-Aware fairly routinely, and my wife doesn't install anything without checking first.

As far as I know, the K6-2 supports all 686 code. I've had similar problems with other programs, and some new memory cured it, so it could very well be a hardware issue. I've always had bad luck with computers - or as I call them, the spawn of satan. :swear:

But here's the interesting part: the problem only happens with the text client, and it's occurred every time I run the text client since the latest update. It's always at the same address (which to me implies a memory fault), and it always happens during the standard folding period. Somewhat random time period, but usually between the 5th and 50th structure.

So far I've tried to experiment with the various client switches, but nothing seems to make a difference.

Just an FYI, I've run the current DF client on several K6-2 and K6-3+ machines with no problems. I don't think any missing opcodes would be the cause of this problem.

Have you tried running memtest86 (http://www.memtest86.com) to check the memory yet? If it fails some of the tests, that's a good sign that your memory *could* be going bad.

Memtest didn't find any errors. Of course, the way Win98 uses memory, who knows?

cool. So even fatal errors wont stop us from folding, eh?
Well, I don't expect the software to work on Win95 since its so ancient so you're lucky it runs at all. As for the Win98SE page fault, I really have no clue but still sounds like hardware based on past experience.

I'm not exactly sure why, but when mine does it the program aborts. Oh well, I guess that's just another reason to talk the wife into another computer.
