Anybody running the client on a Dual Processor box?

version of 0.9.7 for my SMP computer and figured I should probably post it for those of you who have dually windoze machines like me.

Grab it from the homepage and run it as your second client... it uses different keys for caching so it can run along with a regular 0.9.7 client with no problems.

There's a SMP version for 0.9.8 as well. Check the 17OB home page.

Detailed instructions for one way to run duallies (for those that want them):

1. Install the regular 0.9.8 client.
2. Now, from the 17OB home page, click on the 0.9.8 SMP client link and copy it to the same folder that the original 0.9.8 client was installed to. Check under the 11/2 news update, it's at the bottom of the update.
3. Run the regular client (configure it, start it).
4. To start the SMP client, I just went to the folder and dbl clicked on the executable. You'll have 2 windows, both will be labled "17 SB v0.9.8"

dual proc computers are so pimp. i love everyone who has them dearly and that's why i make sure my client can do it. :)

So on a dual system with only one window, I am only running at 1/2 speed?

The client uses 3 threads - I'm not sure what they are for, but a wild guess would be

1 GUI
2 networking
3 calculations

As a thread can only be run on one CPU at the same time, the second CPU can only take the other threads - which are not that CPU-intensive.

So basically the performance is only a tad above 50% of what your system could do (well, maybe less, I don't know about memory "conflict" slowdown).

But the SMP version starts another process (beneath the one from the 'original' version), so there are 2 calculation threads now, which will occupy both CPUs.

Thanks for making a SMP client. I do have one question though, any chance of being able to select processor affinity? Seems that quite a bit of overhead cycles are needed when running 2 client threads. Would something like this help?

Any change of an smp for 0.9.9 ? For the moment, on one machine, i just run two copies (different dirs), and it saturates both cpus.
