I've been running Distributed Folding on a dozen or so suns (mainly because SoB doesn't run on them), and a really nice feature it has is the shutdown method. By simply deleting a .lock file, the client cleanly exits at a convenient time. This is useful because i only run the DF client over night via cron jobs, starting and stopping the clients by deleting the lock. (I can only run them over night, because the solaris kernel has a poor implementation of nicing, resulting in having a niced process running noticeably slowing the machine down.)
