This morning at 0601 GMT we discovered a gigantic 200,000+ digit prime!

46157*2^698207+1 is prime!

If you're wondering why you can't reach the server it's because the link the server is on is down.. no clue when it'll be back up hopefully soon. Figures we find a prime and then the line dies right when we're ready to post about it.

Yes, I had.

Just tried again and I'm actually getting that error -3 code Block Refused problem now.

Cleared the cache and restarted - seems to be ok.

May be some of the teams that are participating are advertising this project among their members. I think that some of the teams are very big. Teams are participating to many projects. So may be some team members are changing to this project?

I have noticed the data server has been slowing down a LOT the last few days, which may account for the funny "infinite time" errors reported in other threads. Right now, when I catch one of my machines logging a new block or retrieving a new workunit, it takes several seconds of turnaround time to get a report back from the server.

This is not a BAD thing, mind you! It just means that (finally) there are enough users to bring the server load average up. :p

Just wondering, when 46157*2^698207+1 was discovered there were a few numbers below that that weren't completely tested yet. Were ALL numebers below 698207 tested or did we just stop testing K=46157 after the discovery?

Well, there is no need to test further numbers. We've found a prime that disqualifies 46157 as being a Sierpinski. Granted, there may be a smaller proth prime below it, but the chances are slim, and there wouldn't be much special about it ;)

It is likely that prior work units were all assigned, and that those clients will continue to work on those units until finished. Louie is the one to ask, however.

Well, I just saw that Heise (publisher of some famous german IT magazines) followed my tip (or maybe that of some others, too?) and wrote this great news in their newsticker.

Responsible for the slowdown could be something called "HNDDoS": Heise Newsticker Distributed Denial of Service

Explanation: There are hundreds (if not thousands) of ppl reading this ticker. When there's an interesting website posted in one of that news, the hit count increased somewhat - so that webserver with small and medium internet connection get (unintentionally!) dropped off the internet for a couple of hours. Heck, it even hit the website of the (second?) largest german webspace provider once. :D

So we're suffering from the downside of increased attention. But I think we can live with that - considering the 200+ new users in the last 24 hours! :|party|:

Concerning the 46157 discussion:

I think there are not _that_ much n values below 698207 left. So it should be no mayor drawback for the project to make a quick check of them.
Maybe someone could do it beside the automatic k,n distribution. I guess nuutti would like to do that task... (<- wild guess)

at the time the prime was found, not all below it had been checked. in fact, the server was assigning work for k=46157 until we were sure we had a prime around noon. Right now, there is no display of the pending data for it but there are techincally 3 n values below the prime that have not yet been returned. All in all, there are 10 values still pending. When they are eventually finished, the space between n=600,000 and n=750,000 will be checked by SB. Wilfrid Keller and Ian Lowman had checked n < 600,000 and I was rechecking it with my cluster but I stopped it when the prime was found.

If any other values come back prime for k=46157 you'll hear all about it but I wouldn't hold my breath. ;)

Also, I noticed the website is a little slower now. Maybe I'll have better hosting options now that the project has already proven itself. I'm totally grateful for the hosting Mike has given the project so far but it may soon come time to move at least some of the website.

When you need some extra bandwidth, I (and likely some others) could host/mirror the clients.
That won't do much, I know, but whenever you need help, there will be a lot of ppl here willing to offer you theirs. :)

I'm willing to mirror the client. I have an Insanely Fast Connection™ with my hosting. I can provide an ftp login, if interested.

(It's a Quad 2.2 Xeon machine... I should find out if my host would let me run sob on it)

not nessisary. the client is already mirrored on other sites and uses none of the server's bandwidth.
