This is my first attempt at a poll.
Add your own variation/suggestion in a comment.
Would someone post the email addy to use to request to have their name
removed from this project without having to visit their forum?

Also, these current stats will be frozen on Monday Jan 13.

they are restarting the RSA stats with the new mandatory client update to .701 that will be out this weekend.

That will make PY222 the Free-DC winner of this phase of the NEO Project.

Leave current stats alone and not participate in the project any further..

Would get my vote...

Shows that we were commited to the project; until we found out they'd started the X-box challenge, then we stopped...

Good suggestion Rus6.

Congratulations to PY 222!

From Mike @ NEO
I was wondering if you could ask the guys to change their user name to delete, it would make it really easy for me.
If you want your name removed from the stats, change your handle to delete I guess and he will remove it.

Just in from my email...

from Mike @ NEO
The rsa-576 was factored, therefore the project is closed, we will be starting on RSA-640 shortly. We are not going to proceed with the xbox challenge until we get a letter of permission to work on the xbox project from microsoft, the same type of permission letter bunnie got.

Is this for real? I thought that the rsa-576 would take thousands if not millions of years to crack.

Didn't someone mentioned it when the project started?

Something smells really fishy here and it ain't IronBits :swear:

So what do you guys think?

I haven't been able to confirm, or even find mention of the RSA-576 being solved, by anyone as of yet.

And the way things keep changing over at Neo, I wouldn't put much weight into anything posted on their site.

As far as Free-DC's "official" posistion on the Neo issue, the concensus among the founders is basically "we don't care", with the notable exception. So whatever the team members decide, is how Free-DC will (not) respond.

According to RSA's web site, it has not been solved:
http://www.rsasecurity.com/rsalabs/challenges/factoring/index.html

That is where it would be posted. Now if the challenge was solved by someone there is a bit of lag time before they post the results and press release. If it was solved I doubt it was by the Neo Project. There is nothing posted on sci.crypt either so I'm not sure where he is getting his information.

As for factoring rsa-576 taking millions of years to crack, that is true only for the Neo project client. The method they are using would probably never find the solution. Anyone who has a working implementation of the NFS algorithm (like us: http://www.nfsnet.org ) could do it in the span of months with the right number of people. Back in 1999 I was part of the group that factored RSA-512 (http://www.rsasecurity.com/rsalabs/challenges/factoring/rsa155.html) and there was only a dozen of us.

It's quite possible that someone has solved RSA-576. I haven't heard anything from my contacts (there aren't that many people doing NFS in the world) but its not that big of a news item so you never know...

Jeff.

The NEO website says:

We found out tonight that someone other than Neo has successfully factored the RSA-576. Due to this the stats will be locked and we will start working on inserting the RSA-640 and changing our website accordingly. Please also check out our announcements in the forums for more news.

RSA-576 has not been factored. The Neo Project found a way to express
RSA-576 as the sum of three squares, but not the prime factors of RSA-576.
The RSA Challenge requires the prime factors.

I emailed RSA directly and above is the reply.

I'm at a loss to understand what's going on over at Neo.

Very interesting...

To be honest, I have always been at a loss to understand what's going on over at Neo. ;)

I think the NEO ship is sinking and sinking faster than we can say RSA-576! :jester:

So lets get the hell out of it while we can. I say we dis-associate ourselves from NEO for good.

Marc_1

I've no doubt now those people at Neo have lost it.

Up until about an hour ago, the front page blurb went something like this:

We found out tonight that someone other than Neo has successfully factored the RSA-576. Due to this the stats will be locked and we will start working on inserting the RSA-640 and changing our website accordingly. Please also check out our announcements in the forums for more news.

Now, all of a sudden their tune has changed:

We have started development of our new client and expect to have something available for private testing with in the month. We have taken "The Squares of RSA-576" off of our page as it was getting a little confusing, people were mistaking it for the factors of the RSA-576 challenge and actually submitting them to RSA and trying to claim the prize.

Either it's one hell of a publicity stunt, or Mike Curry needs to set down the crack pipe.

I don't see the remaining legitimate users hanging around long after this bout of lies.

Let's fold the tents and steal silently away, carefully wiping out our footprints as we go.

Maybe nobody will remember that we were there.

I have requested that Mike remove the Team name Free-DC, or give me instructions on how to accomplish this.
I also asked him to remove my handle at the same time.
If I'm outta line, now's the time to object... looking at the vote, this is what appears to be the desire of the majority.
Now go find a 'real' project and get busy as I know they need your help! :D

Next question begs to be asked...
shall we retire this Forum and the 'homepage' we have for it?

Supp

It's sad to see things going this way, but there's plenty of better DC projects. I'd drop both forum&homepage.

I agree Supp, it is a shame it's in shambles.
It has been removed from the Rank Panel on the frontpage.
In about another 20 minutes or so, it should disappear from there.

Looks like it really needs a total re-write, and I'm waiting for a burst of energy and a large block of time, unless master Dyyryath can come to my rescue :p
