It might help to start by reading this thread (http://www.free-dc.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1510) . :)

In the BIOS, turn off plug&play OS and use SMP 1.1 mode...

If I remember right, the Tyan 2460 is certified up to MP1900+, so bios may not have info. You could check if there's a new bios.

I will try these
I think I found the answer here though

It would seem that the jump to the "cut" L-5 switch was made from the 1900 to the 2000. It would also appear that even some of the pre-2000 cpu even have the bridge cut (according to the info in thier forms)... Leave it up to me to go one cpu above the one that might work.
So.. To bridge or not to bridge with the conductive pen??? or just go find some 1900s that done have the bridge cut.
sigh....

All XP T-breds have L5 cut, some XP Palominos have have L5 uncut, most are cut, T-birds were uncut, so you better get out your pen;)

On that Tyan mobo, you do not have to mess with L5, it uses them as MP anyways :D

are you saying that you have or know of this set up working with xp's that have the L-5 bridge cut?

BOTH Tyans that I had here, did not have the XP CPUs modified, running Mandrake 8.2 in SMP mode.
Whether a new BIOS is smarter to tell the difference, I don't know and I don't know the BIOS rev. that they were using.
Maybe JTrinkle will step up and answer more precisely...
I HAD to mod the XP CPUs for the ASUS A7M266-D tho.

I would like to see some BIOS upgrade info on this board before I go making long-range plans.

This page (http://www.tyan.com/support/html/amd_athlon_duron.html) on the Tyan site says that the 2460 runs with up to 1900+, whereas the newer boards (2462, etc.) all show compatability with up to the 2600+.

Anyone know if, for instance, the others are equally forgiving in the XP vs MP department?

Not that I mind doing the mods, just hate all that squinting if I don't hafta. :p

Edit: I just noticed this was mentioned in an earlier thread, but no conclusions.

squint??? That's why I bought an OptiVisor :D
http://www.texaswoodcarvers.com/Catalog/pg20_optivisors.htm
with optiLoupe of course ;)

Hmmmm. Looked hi & lo. The newer Tyans all just (like, this month!) got BIOS mods for the 2600+ AMDs.

Cygnussphere, looks like you need to (a) trade up your MB or (b) trade down to 1900's.

IB: Even with an OptiVisor, I gotta squint! Them spots on the CPU's are TINY!! :D

Paratima- I had not checked the bios yet. I have 1.04 and there is a 1.05 but along with learning dually Im also running this on SuSe Linux and have no Idea how to flash the bios.

The Tyan S2460 is limited to 1900+ cpu's because of the std ATX connector. AMD specifies that ATX12V should be used as a minimum. Tyan chose a standard ATX connector and now they are paying for it as it is unable to supply the current needed for higher speed grade CPU's. There has been many incidents of the ATX connector melting due to the current being pulled through it when used with high speed CPU's and high power gfx cards etc. If you want to run the latest CPU's and GFX cards, steer clear of the S2460. I run a few S2460's with XP1800's and Matrox G450's and they work great (and have done since their release) but I won't be keeping the boards any longer as my upgradability is none existant.

Aha! That, no doubt, explains why my MSI K7T boards, otherwise fine performers, have pretty much the same limitation. ;) Thanks, Phil, whichever one you are. I had been mystified by that.

cygnussphere, I keep an old 1-gig hdd around with Winders 98 on it, just for occasions like that. I'm not sure where Phil's enlightenment leaves you in your quest, but... Well, basically, I have no idea how to do it under Linux, either. Maybe one of our chums can provide a clue.

i'm not aware of any award bios flasher that works under linux, only dos. my mobo (Epox 8kha) has a really neat feature that lets you hit F12 or something like that right after POST and has its own awdflash in it, so all you need on your floppy is the bios file itself.

This does explain whats happening to me. I think I'm just going to drop xp 1900's into the boxen and cross my fingers unless anyone sees a better route.

Paratima: That's a good idea. I could try a usb hard drive.
Hmmm. I wonder if I could burn a bootable win 98 Cd with the bios update on it as well???

Excellent. Now if it is working with uncut L5 XP's, I would hazard a guess that your XP2000's weren't correctly modded. I have seen people running dual XP2400's on the S2460 and I have even tried it with my XP2400's and it worked well. I didn't keep them in the S2460 because of the potential ATX connector problem, I just verified that they worked.

I'll be content with this config for now.. The way I have to learn things I would melt the ATX connector:bang:

Has anyone put numbers to the most value/ghz/dually/cpu setup. I know with the market for componets being dynamic it changes everyday but just wondering.
