My Dad, bless his soul, was given an HP Pentium something or other with 128MB *(GAHCK)* RAM.

Question: Does RAMBUS need to be installed in pairs or can I get him a single chip?

Thanks peeps.

Rambus comes in a memory module. They can be installed as single units. :)

I have a few RAMBUS machines around work and yes, they must be installed in pairs or else they will not work.

Early motherboards required pairs, later ones didn't:

From Samsung RIMM box:

The latest 32 bit Rambus memory is no longer required to be installed in matched pairs - a single stick is now all that is needed

Try

http://www.samsungelectronics.com/semiconductors/dram/rambus_dram/rambus_dram.htm

Loads of info on there.

Well thanks to rus6 for the clarification.

Now I know I have really old stuff. I will have to inform my boss that our stuff is getting old.

:jester: More borging for me..... :D

Since we are firmly split, I am going to add my $.02:

I thought that i820 (PIII) boards could take single sticks, but that i850 (PIV) boards needed pairs...

I still don't have the definitive word :(

Does it or doesn't it require pairs or no for HP (POS) boxes??

:D

Your best bet would be to call Tech Support and ask them!

And if they screw up, they will send you a new one ;)

Order it from crucial , if you use their motherboard/computer selector you'll get the right RAM

I believe Crucial.com do not sell Rambus RAM.

From their FAQ page:

At Crucial Technology we work hard to provide high quality, low-cost memory solutions. Crucial makes every effort to stay at the forefront of the memory industry while providing our customers with what they want and need. We do not currently offer Rambus upgrades because a relatively small number of our customers have expressed interest in it, and we believe that long-term demand for Rambus product will not be great enough for us to maintain the low-cost pricing our customers have come to expect.

So, go get it at Mushkin.com. I know they have them because I got mine from them!
