This is probably QNX's best release so far. For those of you who are not familiar with QNX RTOS (Real Time Operating Systems), it's actually a development environment that you can use as a desktop...and quite a useable one at that. It is used in embedded systems and for fault-tolerant systems, as well as applications where OS and software timing are critical. They sell the full version with the latest version of Eclipse (Java Dev environment), so the NC (non-commercial) release does not contain some of the development tools.

This version has all their latest media bells and whistles. QNX RTOS also benefits from many IRC clients, latest Mozilla port, RealPlayer, Flash, etc. If you've never seen it, an old review of 6.2 is available here - http://osnews.com/story.php?news_id=534 A good QNX site is http://www.qnxzone.com.

If you are looking for a new and unusual OS as a replacement desktop, or just want to explore and learn about other OS's, QNX RTOS 6.2.1 is a great way to learn. It's a *nix offshoot that you will find just as useable as many Linux distros. Just remember..it's not a desktop OS..never intended to be and probably never will be. If you can accept that it has limitations given what it is...you will find it surprisingly full featured and definately able to perform as a good desktop....it just isn't one ;)

I guess some words on how it works for DC projects would be in order ;) There is a Dnet client and a DF client available. the Dnet client was just updated 3/18 and is reported to be 200% faster than the old one. I used the old QNX Dnet client on OGR so I know that any speed improvements would be welcome ;) The DF client runs slower than the Linux client due to the Real Time nature of the OS and the scheduler controlling how much time each process gets. It's about on par with the BeOS client which means you will sacrifce ~about~ 30-40K per day using it :(

The link is a bit slow right now as it's being hit hard so waiting 24 hours might make a bit more sense.

There is a new online repository for the 6.2.1 3rd Party software:

Just add that to qnxinstall and away you go...
(thanks cdm for data) :)
