View Full Version : Mysterious stoppages

Lately, FD has been stopping on one of my computers. No error message. No other program is affected. It just disappears. I've never seen it disappear, but will notice it when I wake up in the morning or after playing a game (normally I notice it after playing EverQuest or Galactic Civilizations). I see others are reporting stoppages too, but am not sure if this is the same thing. The computer FD is stopping on is my new one (AMD 2400+, 1 giga RAM, 80 giga hard drive, Win2000). My old computer (PIII 500, 512 RAM, 13.5 hard drive, Win98) has also been running FD all this time but without ever having a problem. However, that's about all that the old computer does ... except calling up TV Guide Online since it's now in my TV room. Anyone got an idea what's going on? If this is a known problem, what's the ETA for the fix?

FD? Do you mean DF? ;)

Anything useful in error.log? How are you running the client? Have you tried starting it up as a non-service, and visible, with the options all at their defaults?

DOH! Yup, its FD here. DF = Dumb Fool.

Where's the error log?

bwkaz

In the directory that you decompressed the client in, if it's not running as a service. If it's a service, then I have no idea.

Scott Jensen

Run as a service???

I think I'm confused here... which client are you talking about? The Windows Distributed Folding one, running on Windows 2000? Or something entirely different?

Scott Jensen

Text client on the Win2000 machine.

bwkaz

OK. The error.log file in whatever folder you extracted the client into. Forget what I said about the service. ;)

Now let's just talk hypothetically here for a second. Let's say ... oh ... for example ... that a computer moron doesn't recall where that folder is. Again, just talking hypothetically. Now if that was the case ... and, of course, it isn't in mine ... how would such a computer moron find such a folder? And if that fictional computer moron were to find such a folder, what would you recommend that the said fictional computer moron to operate the error.log and what would you tell him to consider "useful" to know in such a log? Hypothetically speaking, of course. I, myself, have obviously already read the error.log and would naturally post what it says right now, but perhaps those less learned in the ways of computers might get some benefit out of this discussion. After we done educating them, I'll then post the useful information that I've already found in it. Not saying there is. Just teasing along the computer newbies with a little suspense to get them to read all the way to the conclusion of this discussion.

:)

Of course!

Do a search, looking for foldtrajlite.exe. The folder that that file is in is the same place that the error.log should be in.

The relevant part of the log file is anything just before it exits. The log has a timestamp put in it every time the client starts up, so use those timestamps as a reference.

Or, delete the error.log file, start up the client, and wait until it dies, then just post the whole log file. That might be easiest.

 I cannot post the entire log as it exceeds 1000 characters. I pared it down to just certain problem dates.

In your foldit.bat, are you using the "increased buffer size" switch, -df?

The real problem here, though, is the fact that it can't talk to the main servers... do you have any idea why that would be happening?

I don't think I'm using the buffer size thing. I might. How do I check if I am?

As for connections, it's on a cable modem that's always connected. I haven't had problems connecting for anything else.

The first time that you run the program it asks you some questions, one of which is whether to limit the number of sets of data that you can have. If you limit them then you can only have six. I think that if you get to six and it can't connect for some reason then it does quit.

Right-click on foldit.bat and select edit. Look for the line:

./foldtrajlite -f protein -n native

If this line also has -df, then you do not have a limit on the number of data sets that you can buffer. If it doesn't have this you should add it. A .bat file is just a text file, add the -df and when you close the window it will ask if you want to save it.

If the problem is that your link to the distributing folding servers is just really flaky this should fix your problem. If you don't ever connect then this won't help.

That's odd then... hmm.

Check whether you've got -df in there by finding the foldit.bat file (it's in the same folder), right-clicking it, and hitting Edit. If Edit is even a choice, that is -- but it should be. If it isn't, then open up Notepad some other way, and then File->Open, and browse to the batch file (you'll have to change the File Type thingy to "all files").

The bottom line will look like ".\foldtrajlite.exe -f protein -n native" and that will be followed by some other arguments (though the .exe on the end of foldtrajlite may not be there -- but I believe it will be). Check whether -df is among the other arguments, and if not, add it (they're just space-separated), save, exit, and restart the client.

-df makes it be able to buffer more than 6 result sets at a time. If you don't have -df and it gets to 6 sets but still can't upload them for whatever reason, it'll just exit.

Look in the same directory for filelist.txt and see what's in there. Also, what do you see when you start up the program - does it say 'uploading' and then 'unable to contact server' or something like that? Are your stats on the web site increasing as you apparently upload work?

Scott Jensen

There is the -df in it.

As for the servers, it says they're down for maintenance. As for my stats, because of that, I don't know if they're improving. Haven't checked in a long while and forget what they were.

As for what's in filelist.txt, here's all that was in it:
