Does anyone out there have experience of getting XP Pro and 98SE to communicate properly on a network (simple crossover cable, no other machines involved)? No matter what I try I can't get it working. The best I have had so far is the XP Pro machine can see the 98SE machine, but the 98SE machine can't see the XP Pro machine. Neither can access each others shares, and neither can ping each other.

I have no Windows networking experience other than a setting up a direct cable connection with a null modem cable, but I have some *nix networking experience, so I'm not a total dunce. Does anyone have a clue what I could be doing wrong, or help me step-by-step? I have tried every tutorial and troubleshooter out there to no avail, so some personal experiences and hand-written tips would be nice please. I usually keep trying at something until I get it working, but this is just a dead end for me

DID YOU USE XP'S NETWORK SET UP WIZARD? MAKE A FLOPPY DISK WITH XP MACHINE AND THEN PUT IT IN THE '98 MACHINE?

I JUST SET UP TWO XP MACHINES. USING A CAT 5e PATCH CABLE.

Yeah I tried the wizard on both machines, the 98SE box hangs half way through though. I kinda gave up on this though because I read that you should steer clear of the wizard.

Hrm. Anyone else have some insights?

Make sure they are part of the same domain name, whether it be WORKGROUP or whatever.
Make sure you login to both computers using the same userID and password. Make sure you use the Microsoft Client to login on the windows98 box.
Use fixed IP/subnets and Try VNC ;)

Yep, they both have the workgroup configured as 'WORKGROUP'. Both computers are being logged onto as 'alpha' with the same password. The network logon prompt appears on the 98 box, so that was ok. The XP box is configured as 192.168.0.1 and the 98 box is 192.168.0.2. The 98 box has the XP IP as the gateway. Both machines use the subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Still no go.

Anyway, I've finally given up on this and am currently installing XP on the 98 box. If anyone ever figures this out I would be very interested to hear how.

If it's not too late already - change your IPs
192.168.0.1 to 192.168.1.1
192.168.0.2 to 192.168.1.2
See if that does the trick for you...

Unfortunately, it is too late, but thanks for the help - I'll certainly try that next time :)

As you might have guessed, everything is working now (XP <-> XP) and I'm very happy. I think I'll celebrate with a small dump of OGR-24 stubs :)

Another thing you may try if you have to do it again is make sure both computers have a share open. Also on the XP machine, make sure you have an account with the same username/password that the Win98 machine is using.

Thanks magnav0x but I had already checked both those things.

Don't know why you are having problems, have 2 98se, 1 winme, 1 xphome, and 1 xp-pro running on the same network. Have to log on to the two xp machines, but other than that, no problems here..

Hmm I thought of a reason why the XP could see the Win 98 but Win 98 couldn't see XP and they couldn't ping, erm The damn well XP f*xen chocolate firewall :D

XP's firewall was definately disabled. I'm thinking maybe it was due to it being a two machine network with a simple crossover cable. Anyway, it doesn't matter now - I wouldn't ever put 98 on any half decent machine after seeing how XP performs :smoking:
