Yup, the changeover to the new client in Distributed Folding has been ugly. At least, it hasn't gone nearly as smoothly as we've grown accustomed to.

The Linux clients appear to have come through this update with flying colors (at least, all of mine updated correctly), but the Windows client is having some problems. Right now we're looking into this, and IronBits has had some success with just deleting the whole directory and reinstalling from scratch. You can keep an eye on this thread for details on the new client as they become available (either through the project leaders or our own trial and error). So far, Howard (the project leader) hasn't commented on the problems.

While this can be frustrating, it can also be a boon to us. For the last several days, Ars Technica has been steadily gaining users and these client issues probably won't help them at all. While this is a hassle, it will be a much bigger hassle for their 100 or so brand new users who haven't seen this kind of thing before than our more focused group of veterans. We're a smaller team, which should allow us to deal with things like this much quicker than they will. For those new to the project (and Free-DC), feel free to ask for help in the DF area of our forums. We've got a lot of very experienced crunchers who'd love to help you out!

As long as we're on the subject of new users, let me say welcome to Fozzie, afriend, thor, and qibhom. We're all glad you've come aboard and we hope you'll make yourselves at home! We've also seen magicfan crunching DF for us lately. Like many of us, he's got ties to Free-DC and Ars Technica. Either way, good to have you here, magicfan!

I am also struggling with this update. Initial indications show just over a 75% mortality rate for my machines running windows. My HT P4 3.2 currently refuses to run DF at all. Four AMD XP series machines are also refusing to run the new client. The two machines that are running the client are struggling to do so. Currently, my XP2600 box is performing 1 generation 0 structure every 2-3 seconds.

My goal, as time permits, is to retry the client from clean installs. I do not have a lot of faith in this course of action, but there are few alternatives.

This situation looks decidedly not good.

Yeah, my fresh installs (Windows) appear to be working correctly. Try that...

Fresh install worked good here. At least there is a fix...no matter how cumbersome.

Yeah, either the new client is doing extra work and hence, is much slower (didn't he say something about an algorithm change?), or there's still something wonky going on. Even my Linux boxes (which all auto-updated just fine) aren't giving the kind of output that they should be. I've noticed that most of my Windows boxes, while running, are still on the first (0) generation. Something is probably still amiss...:looney:
