traceroute works

traceroute to www.distributedfolding.org (38.112.100.76), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets
1 192.168.2.1 0.790 ms 0.510 ms 0.530 ms
2 66.51.209.1 12.920 ms 15.789 ms 12.852 ms
3 g6-0.mon.cr1.lax1.dslextreme.com (66.51.199.133) 12.952 ms 12.823 ms 12.787 ms
but the DF client still won't fetch/send work :(

I think it's the same problem as here: http://www.free-dc.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3969

Happening on FreeBSD as well, seems to be worst when -q flag is being used. The code probably needs to be modified to go into -i f mode if the client can make contact after several attempts insted of stopping, that would at least allow you to continue folding and upload the results later.

Glad you reminded me of this thread ;)
It also happens with Redhat shrike and Mandrake 9.1.
I'm behind an SMC NAT DSL firewall.

It's happened to me on & off several times with the current client, both at work (firewalled) and at home (not). Tonight I uploaded about 1.5 million points worth & it took me over two hours due to intermittent timeouts. Should have taken just over an hour.

My theory is that we're just getting the inevitable collisions inherent in the network traffic. In Phase II, we're uploading VERY often, especially with this faster protein. I don't believe that Howard correctly anticipated the amount of traffic we would be generating. He miscalculated about his speedup in Phase I also, if you remember.

I now have several machines at work on -if and I upload them daily, in batch, where I can watch it. This keeps the frequent uploads from interfering with the online work we do. With the increasing frequency of timeouts that I'm seeing, the clients run a lot faster this way, due to the amount of processing you lose in a timeout! If it continues to worsen, I may soon switch ALL my boxen to this method.

I guess what I'm saying is, that you may be having problems specific to your installation or it could just be a condition of the way the client works.

Good reasoning alright, but it doesn't happen on my windows boxen, behind the firewall.

Oh! :o

I've got a box with SuSE 7.3 & one with 8.0. The 7.3 is behind a firewall. No probs like you're reporting on either.

I'll try updating the 8.0 box off the web tonight (after a judicious Save ;) ), with whatever the latest version is.
