Red Hat has that neat system manager that looks like a windows taskmanager. Any idea how to somehow get something equivalent under Gentoo?

Gentoo with KDE up and running fine on Barton 2500+ (which kicks butt doing DF, I might add.)

Is there some Gentoo killer-app that I just absolutley have to emerge ???

Are you thinking of the gnome-system-monitor?
Your Redhat installation probably has Gnome and KDE both available, with a merged menu. If that's what you are looking at , you might try and emerge it and see how much of Gnome you have to pull in to support it.

:( Looks like about all of it. That's, oh, about 30 hours worth of stuff for one little app... :(

bash-2.05b# emerge -p gnome-system-monitor

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Yep- that's a long build.

Not to hijack your thread; but are you running chessbrain on your Gentoo box? I can't seem to get it to fire off on mine

:bang:

The download, or the ebuild?

rshepard
09-02-2003, 09:32 PM
I've tried both- I tried the download first, then fell back to the ebuild on the gentoo site--- both try to start, then fail trying to find the route to the Supernode. I've tried running it as root as well as regular user, and with the adsl firewall on and off-- always the same result

Can't get either to run:

./cbspn: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
bash-2.05b# emerge -p libstdc++-libc

Did an emerge lib-compat which fixed the problem. Ran the client. It seems to have connected to the server:

Did the benchmark....

To get chessbrain running under gentoo you need to emerge lib-compat. *whoops look like you beat me to the punch there*

Sorry....

Heh - wonder if I should emerge seti@home, folding@home, or any of the other DC clients to check them out.....

rshepard
09-02-2003, 10:11 PM
Yeah, I had tried that already-- it still just hangs looking for the route.

Mine seems to be fine... Of course you've checked the .conf file for the address of the server, and can ping it with no trouble?

rshepard
09-02-2003, 10:26 PM
yes- address is there, and it pings like anything...:trash:

Try this:
ssh -p 3434 64.71.165.209
and without the port
ssh 64.71.165.209

One should get you an ssh_exchange_id error and the other should get you an immediate connection refused. (This is the node you have, right?) If you can connect that much, then I don't know what to tell you - your system and the server are "talking" just fine...

rshepard
09-02-2003, 10:41 PM
yep- one refuses, and one gets an ident error--
ah well, I'll tinker with it some more-- Thanks for brainstorming :)

Ouch - just running CB on 2 boxen out of 14 caused my DF output to drop by 17% over the last hour. Guess I'll have to pass on doing that for now.... Guess that Barton 2500 is cranking out more than I thought....

KDE has a system monitor. It's called KSysGuard or something, I think (I don't use KDE). I think it used to be ktop. It should be part of the kde-base ebuild that you've already got installed.

EDIT: Just found this --

http://docs.kde.org/en/3.1/kdebase/ksysguard/usingtheksysguard.html

Looks like you just need to do 'ksysguard' from a command line. It should also be in your KDE menu.

LinNeighborhood works quite nicely.

OK - other than the disk space (which isn't an issue with 70 Gb free here ), what's the downside to doing a Gnome install over-top-of (in addition to) the KDE install I've done? Your desktop shot convinced me :D

rshepard
09-03-2003, 07:32 AM
There shouldn't be any problem installing both-- When I set up my Gentoo box, I emerged Gnome and then emerged KDE right afterwards, just so I'd have it if I wanted it.

rshepard's right, they've live side by side quite nicely. You can then choose which one to use on login. Gnome takes a little getting used to, but I love it. I also think it's a much more attractive desktop, but that's just my opinion. It can require more tweaking and adjusting to get it the way you want it, and some stuff needs to be pulled from outside the base install (Nautilus scripts come to mind) to have all the bells and whistles, but it's fabulous when it's right.

If you really want to enjoy Gnome, you should give the latest beta version of it a shot. It's *vastly* improved performance wise. You can get an ebuild for it right here:

http://www.breakmygentoo.net

It should build and run just fine. If you have questions, let me know. I'm currently running gnome-2.4-beta2. If you're really feeling adventurous, you can also give the 2.6.0-test4 kernel a shot (it's in the regular Gentoo portage tree). It works great, too.

If you get stuck or need help making something work, let me know.

I'll give this a look tonight. I tried an overnight "emerge gnome", but it hung on some debug statement on file 18 of 83....

Not certain how to proceed - maybe do an "emerge unmerge gnome" before trying anything else? I'm somewhat pissed here - this is the first thing that's screwed up on this Gentoo install, and it was all going Soooo smoothly this time.

I'll possibly try using something from break-my-gentoo overnight tonight - net result can't be any worse than the current broken emerge, I suppose....

Ugh. Hows about a mini-howto about using the -beta2 file from breakmygentoo ?

Couple of things. First, your emerge would have installed everything up to the package that bombed. Do you know which package it was? Compile problems are (thankfully) pretty rare using 'stable' ebuilds. You can see what's left to build by doing 'emerge -p gnome'. The first thing on the list is probably the package you're having problems with. Give it a shot and let me know what it says.

As for the 'BreakMyGentoo' stuff, you'll want to use an 'overlay' portage tree. Basically, it's a second tree that keeps the BreakMyGentoo ebuilds separate from the rest of the portage tree. I'll be happy to walk you through setting this up (it's quite painless) and emerging a couple of the ebuilds so you can see how it works. Of course, we might want to figure out what your current problem with the stable Gnome is before we go there. ;)

Try the 'emerge -p gnome' and post what you see. We'll take it from there, if you'd like.

The current "stable" ebuild bombs on nearly every file, due to some problem with something called "scrollkeeper". Each re-start builds another couple of files, but something just isn't correct in the whole process - and I've done this enough to know that the end result would be very broken.

I set up the portage overlay dir, and I'm about 1/2 way through building the beta from breakmygentoo, and it's gone MUCH more smoothly than any "official" ebuild that I've done to date! I'm hoping to find that it's finished in the morning :) I ended up having to unmerge a couple of packages that got emerged when I tried to do the initial install of gnome - they were blocking the beta build. Got through that, and it's merrily building. I'll let you know what the result of a reboot and running gdm is tomorrow...

EDIT:

Well, Beta 2.4 came up and ran fine, no problems. However, it's a far cry from the desktop look of your screen-shot.... No icons, everything is text. No web browser, not much in the way of utilities. Suggestions for additional emerges ?????
