You'll find that Mandrake is equivalent to Red Hat with an "easier and better" install and user interface for new Linux users.

Much of what is in the book is going to be applicable to more current versions, but RH 7.2 is pretty out-dated compared to "todays" versions. You'd really be better off getting getting a modern 9.x version of RH or Mandrake.

I lean toward Gentoo these days, but it's a tough install for someone new. I used to use RH and Mandrake both. The link that PCZ gave you, linuxiso.org, has the 15 most popular distros on the front page, and additional links to another 30 or so. Anything "front page" is mainstream and pretty much functionally equivalent. SuSe Debian, TurboLinux, Gentoo, Red Hat, Mandrake - they're all good distros....

And these guys have a "linux pack" - all major distributions, a total of 22 CDs for $40.00, or you can buy your choice of distro CD's for 1.99 each, if you don't have the bandwidth to D/L what you're after. Due to Red Hat's lawyers, you have to order those distro disks as "Blue Jacket" disks :D

I use it more than Micro$haft XP now.

It has it's odd few niggles but I forgive it all those just for the chance to be unshackled from Bill's Bundles.

BTW I found that cycle for cycle it folds a better protein.

I have got nowhere near the 3.93 I got on my mandrake laptop with any of my boxen running Micro$haft OSes.
