MAD-ness

I know that the issue of running the Distributed Folding client was discussed on the old Yahoo Group board but I just went through all 500+ messages scanning the topic and found only one that mentions ram discs in the topic. I know for a fact that there were some conversations about RAM discs in the middle of some other conversation threads, but finding these is incredibly painful due to the Yahoo Group format.

Can anyone link me to a site/post/faq/etc about using RAM discs in general and specifically for this client?

A quote from the teammate who is looking for this info specifically to let you know his circumstances/needs/etc.:

4 machines with 1Gb RAM and XP1700 cpus. I think, after reading a few threads, that maybe running the client on a RAM drive might eek out a few more structures a day. Is anyone running the client on a RAM drive? If so, care to offer any details? I really don't have the background, time or patience at this point to figure it all out myself. Are XP1700/1GB RAM/win2k boxes good candidates for this? Any hints, direction or instruction would be much appreciated

Second issue:

I have access to the home computers of several friends/family but they are still running Win9x. Until they totally frag thier OS (which happens far too often, but in an unpredictable fashion) and call me in to fix things, I can't justify a reformat and the installation of WinXP. What I am looking for is something that would have the features and convenience of the NT service (invisible, auto-start, auto-stop, lowest priority level) but for Win9x. I *think* that you can accomplish this via a combination of scripts (say, a batch file with commands to delete foldtrajlitelock.exe if it exists and then to run foldit.bat with the newly created batch file being placed in the startup folder) and DOS/windows tricks/tweaks (editing properties of the file to be hidden/minimized/etc.). However, I lack the knowledge to create my own, so if anyone has them or any other useful DF related tools for Win9x (sometimes you just can't load a 'real' OS on a machine and you have to rough it) I would be very grateful.

Thanks.
