I would still recommend going Gentoo, even though it's not a GUI install, it's still fairly straightforward.

Or go to the Suse site and find the iso's on their ftp site. Their install is very easy, but not as compatible.

My I ask a slightly off topic question?

I too am thinking about geting into 64 bit pc.
What other os's besides linux can do 64bit?
Of course I'm talking about freely downloadable os's.

By reading some other boards I think I have concluded
that some version of windows os will run on a 64bit system.
But isn't the issue that to take advantage of the 64bits,
one needs to have 64bit applications?

Thanks for the interuption.
