According to a recent US Federal Trade Commission report, setting up a "do not email" registry is futile.

In this report, the FTC states that it rejects the registry because it feels that it would become a "weapon" that the spammers could use to fortify their list of victims. In other words, they feel that the register could very well increase the amount of spam consumers receive, and that there would be no way to enforce it effectively.

Basically, in my opinion, it's not going to work (and in talkikng to alot of my co-workers, I'm not alone).

First of all, you have to be able to identify the spammer and they go to great links to avoid that. They forge email headers, when they open an account with an ISP, they use a false name, and frequently, they operate in a country that has looser laws than we do, most notably, Russia, PRC, the Caribbean Islands and Central and South America. It's becoming increasingly difficult to track these folks down.

Something like the register has no practical effect because if it gets too difficult here (US), then the spammers will just move someplace else.

If you want to get the full story by the author, Tomas C. Greene, look HERE.

The commentary is strictly my opinion.

Any thoughts?

They should put the bastards, that send SPAM, 1 day in jail for each SPAM message they send out.
They should FINE the company that paid them to send the SPAM, per person that sent the SPAM.
That should be about $100 per person that sent SPAM on their behalf, per email that each one of those person(s) sent.
:D

No arguments here, but HOW do we catch them? How do we prosecute them? What if they are in another country? Who's laws do we abide by?

I agree with the principle....(let's take the Godfather approach)...but I'm just not sure how to go about doing it.

I think vigilante style justice is the only thing that will work here. Find where the spammers live, then stand outside their house throwing cans of actual real spam through the windows. That should get their attention pretty quick.

Then smash up their computers or, better yet, confiscate them and add them to Free-DC's crunching arsenal. ;)

Personally, hanging is a little restrained so I think public flogging would work. Ten strokes with a cat-o-nine tails would do the trick.

For the proper technique, see C. S. Forester. :D

I always wonder why spam is working; I mean, somebody has to buy the shit that is promoted in the spammails or nobody would send spam any longer due to a lack of success.
