"A small, colorful protein will build itself up on your screen as the program generates structures so you can see how many you have made and how fast it is progressing. "

And how much faster would it be with this feature off. The way I see it the client is displaying three counters.

Just wondering, I don't care about preatty pictures.

The ASCII art takes up so little processing power that it doesn't matter. Avoiding the OpenGL screensaver version is where the processing savings come from. For the record, the ASCII art is merely a random representation giving you some idea of the progress you have made on that particular protein structure.

I doubt that it doesn't take much processor time. At least when running in windows 2000 the CSRSS task (responsible for displaying windows as far as I know) runs about 5% of the time. When running DF client in quiet mode id runs with about 1-2%. Thats about 3% you can gain by not displaying the ascii art.
