View Full Version : Need help w/ ASUS, A'64, and Corsair

This is hopefully simple, but fear not.

We have 2 A'64 w/ Corsair CL2 (2-2-2-5)
on ASUS K8V SE Deluxe.

Also have 2 FX machines w/ Corsair ECC CL2
on SK8N.
These are solid and not why I am writing.

We bought it all before it all went 'obsolete',
We knew Sempron and new dual core CPU would work.

Configuration.

The Corsair is PC-3200 (DDR-400) 512mb (double sided)
with 3 dimms in each A'64 (754) machine, 2 in each FX-53 (940).

A64's are Clawhammer AND NewCastle.
The ONLY way it runs with 1004 BIOS is as DDR-333.
Expect and get single-channel operation.

FX's are San Diego and Sledgehammer.
Expect and get dual channel operation.

Side info.

K8V SE uses Via K8T800 Single channel mode.
SK8N uses Nvidia Gforce(?) Dual channel mode

SK8N FX-53s (2) ECC PC-3200 are fine with Corsair CL2 (2 x 512mb ea).
Fry's was sold out of Corsair ECC otherwise would be more.

Same A'64s with Kingston CL3 runs 3x512 no problem.

Win XP AMD64 runs great w/ CL2, no problems. Need more drivers to use full time.

Memtest86 reports: A64s w/ 3 x 512 max error free rate = 185 mhz
A64s w/ 2 x 512 max error free rate = 191 mhz
A64s w/ 1 x 512 max error free rate = 200+ mhz (bingo)

FX's w/ 2 x 512 max error free rate = 200+ mhz (bingo)

Questions:
Can anyone explain what is wrong?

How do we fix the A64's to both be stable
and be fast again? (in the BIOS?) ?

Thank you
Ben

Hmmm,

I have an SK8N with an opteron 144 in and 2 512Mb chips and also an SK8V deluxe with an A64 3200.

They are both running Linux in 64 bit mode, but I'll see if memtest has been compiled for the platform and try the tests or something similar. I should have some decent Corsair mem lying around somewhere.

Thanks.

I would greatly appreciate it.

Note please: You say SK8V. We have K8V SE. Any difference except chipset?

In pondering,
I think the 64 bit cpu, 32 bit mode of Win XP & ASUS 754, and 64 bit mode of Corsair
(in that sequence) is the problem because even XP 64 beta was stable OC'd.

Something stupid (a voltage, or one mem delay setting or something is off by 1).

It feels 'just shy' of being stable.

For laughs, and maybe this will help,

The Clawhammer was cranked up until L2 cache went above 4000MB/sec
(about 2280 Mhz - the 5:3 : 12 game -- it became unstable above 4000)

Right now, the L2 is reporting 3984 MB/sec (1MB) and solid.
But, this also pushes down the FSB to 222-223 mhz'ish area
as DDR-333. Sad, screwed up config.

Is it possible that when ASUS added Sempron in 1004 they dropped,
made a mistake with or forgot the 1MB Clawhammer core timing?
Most L2s are back at 512Kb for now. AMD tells us they will be 1MB again soon.

Thank you in advance,
Ben
