View Full Version : Ars bashing...so to speak

So is everyone gearing up for this then?

I hear some talk about No.1 but I think just some Arsian stompage should prove a wiser target.

So what's the deal, we kicking Ars??

Bok
09-21-2004, 01:34 PM
That is a worthy goal....and a lot more realistic than #1.

but we need some more numbers in order to have the goal not too far ahead.. I'm switching my boxen over to D2OL probably tomorrow (100K in TSC).

Probably FreeDC_AMD_Team will be created to help you guys. Just waiting.....

*****EDIT*****

I don't know if there's a lot of guys with only one computer, if so then is better to join forces than crunching alone.

Hmmmm, is it time to release a new version of D2OL Daddy that secrely switches the node IDs to TFY on Ars? :smoking:

Just kidding. Bring it on! Its no fun unless there is some competition.

i will be doing D2OL on a limited basis, but the client software does not fit my needs in many ways

currently my work lab has no internet connectivity, so any project without a simple way to proxy or sneakernet is not an option (any manual ways don't cut it with 50+ boxen)

em99010pepe
10-05-2004, 02:36 PM
It is possible to sneak-internet at D2OL.
Just read this text written by one of D2OL moderators:

Hi and welcome. This is a very easy thing to do so follow along.

After you made a temporary installation of D2OL on the machine that has internet access, download the number of tasks you want to crunch. Make sure the agent is offline during this so you are not actually crunching anything during this process as we want all of these tasks for your other machine.

When done find the SengentD2OL/D2OL folder. You will want to copy out the entire /res/ folder to a CD, flash drive or whatnot. 2,000 tasks should be about 10MB. Now start back up that temp install of D2OL, turn off the agent so it is again not crunching, go into the status menu and flush all of the tasks. This will delete all of the tasks you just downloaded but that’s ok because you have already saved them somewhere else.

Now on the machine that does not have Internet access, just browse to the SengentD2OL/D2OL folder and move the previously saved /res/ folder on top of the one in this machine. This will overwrite the current /res/ folder with one with all of your tasks.

When the tasks are done, which may be weeks depending on your cpu speed and how many tasks you downloaded, just turn off D2OL and find the resultQueue.dat file in the SengentD2OL/D2OL/res/ folder. This is your result file. Cut/move this file to your portable medium and stick in the same folder on your machine with Internet access. Start up the client on the Internet machine and let it upload the results and download new tasks.

This may look like its hard and takes a lot of time, but is really not. Once you have downloaded the tasks you want, it is really only a two minute job.

Hope this helps a bit. Feel free to ask any more questions, that’s what I am here for.

Any doubts?

Carlos

that type of method isn't practical for 50+ PC's

it takes too much time

projects that really want to get no-netters to participate need to build a proxy system that is easy and seemless, posting ways to manually copy directories and such might be ok for someone with 1-2 PC's , but don't cut it for large farms. it is too much work, not worth it.

All you need to do is join team id 201 and the stats can be gathered for the sub team competition. What do you say?

Yeah, and then it is going to be same story for me as it was in DF:bang:

Started crunching for FREE-DC and was 42nd in the Team...
Then there were all those express trains coming through and i ended up being 60 or 61 in the team:swear:

Now the same story...started D2OL am already at Top 19 and now people like PCZ and Condor start hitting it hard again... Other people (express trains too) will join...

And when D2OL ends someday I will be something like Top 50...same old story again...

But oh well it is all for Free-DC and D2OL  :rotfl:
