I think that the idea behind this project is great. However I know nothing about electronic engineering/circuit design, sadly this means I never really appreciate any of the breakthroughs that we seem to be making.
Clearly I need to do some background reading, can anybody suggest some books or websites which would take me from complete ignorance to 'basic uderstanding of what my island is doing' ?

I too would be very interested in learning alot more about what we are accomplishing with this project. Anyone?

Hi,

Wikipedia should tell you what a circuit is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_circuit

A brief intro to self-checking circuits and their use:
http://dhep.sf.net

Lecture course notes on self-checking:
http://www.cse.ttu.edu.tw/~cheng/courses/soc/S02/AsyncSoc10.ppt

Two books on the subject:
Fault-Tolerant Computing: Theory and Techniques (Editor, Co-Author), vols. I & II; Prentice-Hall, Inc; May, '86

John F Wakerly, "Error detecting codes, self-checking circuits and applications (Computer design and architecture series)", North-Holland, 1978

Hope this helps. I'll be happy to discuss the subject if your're up for it.
