demolinux is a linux distribution that runs completely from the Cdrom/RAM, doesn't install on the harddrive at all

has anybody tried using it for temporarily borging boxen without writing to the hard drive?

should be able to boot the cd, download a DC client, run it
when its time to give up the boxen, just take out the CD and restart the PC to return it to its "natural" state

i will try it tomorrow :)

the reason i am going to try it is, i have access to various pc's on weekends, but i can't really take the time to load/uninstall/fix the hd if i put anything onto it ;)

needs to be very stealthy like :D

demolinux 2.0 didn't recognize the nic in the two machines i tried (one at home and one at work)
so i will download v3.0 and see if it does better at nic detection
kinda hard to do DC without internet! :o

There is also a firewall by Mandrake. Looks pretty good. I have just installed it on another box to play with it. Currently, I use Smoothwall, but find it lacking in STATS and Reports.

Astaro is very complex and not for a newbie (like me), but, it's fantastic for those of you that understand firewalls and all them services... pretty good Stats and Reports.

For a while I used Trinux (http://trinux.sourceforge.net/) to boot naked 133 and run genome.... It worked very well besides the ocassional seg fault

What I like , Yes it may be floppy based but every box that I know of can boot off of a floppy, I know of quite a few that can't from cd's.

It loads most of the distro from the internet... (pro/con)

Plus it's neat! IMO :D

So does the genome client run from a ram disk?

I haven't tried it yet, but there is absolutely no reason why it shouldn't.

Shadicus is going to try this with a 'cold backup' server we have that currently sits powered down day in and day out.

I'm sure he'll post any details as he gets them.

Yeah throwing in a cd and then booting up a fleet of computers would be the soo nice thing to do... then the easy part it to just to explain as to why you need the computers on and that you won't do anything to damage them :p
