I've not seen much written about the Alpha CPUs, except that there is sporadic mention of how fast they should be at DF!

Maybe the SLRI Hogue gang can shed some light here. They had to test with Alphas when they built the Tru64 client.

Are there any out there? How do they compare against, say, the latest gigahertz+ x86 CPU's?

Th graph may need a bit of explanation. we made 5000 structures and made a 'histogram' of the time taken for the structures. For example on the top graph, Alpha peaks at 1 second with a value of 0.53 or so. That means 53% of the 5000 structures took 1 second. meanwhile 35% of the structures took 3 seconds on a P3-450. The total AREA (or integral) under each curve adds up to 100% of course. For a rough idea of the performance, just focus on where each peak is, which is roughly the average time to build a structure on that CPU.

Howard, what you're describing is EXACTLY the quantification I was looking for. Umm, however, ummm, well, the graph sorta doesn't display on that link. It's sort of, like, blank. :help:

At the top of the page the image file is not available: http://bioinfo.mshri.on.ca/pandbbann.jpg

Paratima, the graphs are on the page, but you must scroll down to see them.
