Dear contributors,

Due to the fact I will soon be leaving the lab I'm at, and will have no permanent abode for quite a while, DHEP will have to be shut down. This is UNLESS someone would like to host it. I am willing to cooperate with this person to set it up and keep it running.

Hi IronBits,

If you want to look at being the primary, I think I can act as an emergency/secondary backup if needed. Would need much hand-holding in order to get the thing setup etc. Have sent a PM to Miguel regarding the situation.

Cheers,

Miguel,

I hope the hosting problem can be resolved soon so that this worth-while DC project can continue... however, in the mean time could you please update the main website and News section (and maybe take stats offline), to reflect that the project is down until further notice. (Purely for the sake of public relations!)

Regards,
Andrew

IronBits, any news on this yet?

IronBits

He asked if we could load up the Java Server software for him.
I asked Bok if he would handle it ...
I haven't heard back from Bok yet.

He has not sent me anything yet...

I haven't seen anything from you on that????

Hi Bok, IronBits;

So what's shaking in the DHEP world? Noticed that the stats page is back up and the project appears to be running. Will it be transfered to another site?

He just sent me another email, asking the same thing, so evidently, my last response never made it to him.
I responded to him again, asking that he expidite making up a .tar file and any instructions, send it to me, or provide linkage, so we can get it up and running asap for you guys.

Progress!
I just recieved a large chunck of it.
Bok is busy installing on the new server as I type this.

He didn't mention which Java was needed, so Bok is going to start with Sun ...

I don't know how many more pieces he needs to send me before the project is up and running once again...

I hope the new Dual Xeon 3.6GHz Nocona CPUs are up to the task. :rotfl:

And thanks to Dyyryath when he put Gentoo 64 on it.
He gave me a backup routine that mounts a 2nd spare drive, then copies all the important stuff to it, then unmounts it to keep it protected.
It's on a large UPS, and my DSL service has been very reliable for the past 4 years.

Hopefully we'll be good to go soon. :)

Bok
01-19-2005, 12:51 AM
Update

installed the db + tables and users no problem.

configured the software no problem

sun jdk is masked for Gentoo right now so instead of forcing it I tried

1. blackdown 1.4.2, no go, many many errors on starting the server

2. ibm 1.4.2, less errors but still many

I'm presuming it's not compatible with anything but Sun but will wait on a response before going any further?

Miguel?

IB, can you email miguel too and let him know

Bok has been busy installing the java server part, and there are some problems.

Master Dyyryath to the rescue!
Jeff has taken more time out of his busy schedule to put his back into it.
He spent a good deal of time on the Server last night and sent me an email.

I've got the server updating all of the installed packages. I'll check
on it's progress tomorrow. Once that's done, I'll install the necessary
X libs to make your DHEP server work correctly.

I just found this subject and am amazed that no email was sent. Is Miguel so fed up with this project that he didn't bother to tell some 2000-3000 contributors to his project what going on? :bonk:

Well~ as I understand it Miguel has finished his PhD, so officially the project (at Surrey University) has finished. However, I think Miguel wants to carry this on- but remember: it's in his own personal time, and the objective of the project are his own. I wish Surrey Uni had gone to a postdoc, or another PhD at least to continue this excellent work. I have decided to switch to BOINC- which now has many worthwhile projects.

Hi Ironbits,

Ok,

just read the messages. Seems simple enough. I'll have to create a virtual address for now in apache, perhaps dhep.dbestern.com ?

IB, do you have DNS set up for all xxxxx.dbestern.com ?

Anyway, it'll have to wait until I get to the hotel tonight :)

He put a vague note up, in a supermarket on the other side of town you mean. The supermarket I only visit once every 3 months or so. Many people probably don't even know of it's existense.

Miguel promised us, when we give him our email-addresses, that mass mailing would be kept to a minimum. Well, how low can you go? As far as I can remember there never was a mass mailing. This would have been the perfect opportunity to have one.

Feb 22 2005: Beta test of the new DHEP server has begun and will finish on Monday 28th. To migrate to the new server you must change the following in your scripts: every time it says 139.184.166.27 should be changed for stats.dbestern.com. This includes the java.policy file and the launching scripts. Statistics will not be logged for this week to incur no disadvantage to those joining in the beta test. Beta test result will be announced on Monday 28th. If successful all users should migrate and stats collection will be resumed on Tuesday from the new server. If unsuccessful stats collection will be resumed on Tuesday from the old server.. Progress of the new server can be checked here. http://dhep.dbestern.com 66.51.209.121

Again, not sure how useful this...
I've noticed that it seems client connections are often being lost (maybe it's always been this way?). My main machine 'zero' has reconnected twice in as many days, and my 'ace_dent' laptop reconnected half a dozen times when left crunching overnight- now unplugged. This is based on multiple entries appearing for a single client on the Topology page; last night when I checked ~1/2 were actually 'dead' entries.

Cheers,
Andrew

rshepard
02-24-2005, 07:29 AM
Looking at the daily stats, it appears that the running total didn't reset at midnight.
The dates changed OK, but the totals labeled as the 23rd are actually from the 22nd, and today's numbers contain the totals from yesterday.

Note to ace_dent: the "dead entries" have always been a part of the topology map--I don't remember the details, but I don't think they hurt anything.

ace_dent
02-24-2005, 08:13 AM
@rshepard

Ok- thanks for the info. It might be my memory, but it seems these dead entries are more common on the new server?... Could be network issues at my end though.

DrkNexus
03-03-2005, 01:00 PM
I just noticed the project was back up, so I re-joined it. However manually configuring all my boxes to use the new server is going to take effort I don't really want to expend. Is there anyway somebody could automate this process? Second I just thought I should point out that when downloading the client from the server it still points to the old 139.?.?.? address rather than the new dhep.dbestern.com address (at least for the GUI version), if that is the case for other versions as well it is going to extremely limit new participants.

Bok
03-03-2005, 01:03 PM
We are working on fixing the download. Unfortunately the addresses and such are embedded in a windows .msi install project and someone needs to work out how to use the relevant applications to fix this.

Stay tuned!

Bok

DrkNexus
03-04-2005, 02:35 PM
That part is understandable, but since I noticed the issue with the GUI download version, which isn't encapsulated in anyway - and so should be an easy fix. It might be a good thing to temporarily disable the downloads so we don't get people attemping the project - finding no results - and being upset as a result.

Bok
03-04-2005, 02:43 PM
The Island_NT.zip right ?

ok, I've fixed that one.

I'll see where we stand on the .msi.

I might be wrong in my basic assumption, but it seemed to me that circuts with fewer gates evolve more quickly to their 'optimal' solution. I was thinking that since the project right now is suffering from limited computational power because of the switch in servers etc if it might be a good idea to evolve smaller circuts until we regain some more users. It looks odd that our final results page indicates that we were steadily churning out results until November and then stopped cold.
