We be running on OS X :)
What a PITA this OS is so far...
Way too much candy and kiddie BIG ICONS for me ;)

I'll be tweaking it as I go along...

China, any tips for OGR on this critter?

Go to Dock preferences and turn it all off..especially the Genie thing..that gets up my nose.

It's much more difficult to "lean out" OS X than it is a *nix distro or a Win install.

BTW, how much RAM you get or install?

512mb 1.42GHz model. ;)

I finally figured out how to turn off the screensaver and powersaver options, so hopefully it will keep running.

What *nix will run on it? I have the system CD that came with it, so I suppose I could fdisk the whole thing and remove OS X, and still be able to re-install the OS X at a later time if I want to. right?

I sure as hell would feel at home a lot more in *nix than I do with this Mac stuff ;)

What priority do you run yours at in the dnetc.ini file?
I think mine is set at 3 and it's not maxing out the cpu, prolly 96%...
It's not being used for anything else atm...

Anyone else have a comment or suggestion?

I'm sure there is a linux distro out there for it. Hell, I'd bet that Gentoo would run on it...

I believe Yellow Dog Linux (YDL) certified itself as running.

I don't run a discrete nice level..just default.

I also run Unsanity's haxies - APE Manager, Shapshifter (AquaPro theme) and their transparant dock haxie. None of which will speed you up ... but will make the look and feel much better :)

And don't delete OS X just yet. Let it grow on ya... ya might like it after a while.

Not sure what else I'll do with it, but I'd like to be able to control the darn thing.
stop all services that aren't necessary, disable all the GUI stuff that sucks up processor time/memory...
Is there an init 3 mode, where all I have is a terminal to run the client wide open?

1. So what numbers you getting? I would think you would be doing between 26 and 28M/s? Close?

2. Some links -

http://www.macosxhints.com/

www.macnn.com

http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/

http://www.kernelthread.com/mac/osx/

3. I'm checking into booting into CLI mode. A half-memory tells me you can't (under normal circumstances) but I'm frequently wrong so I'm checking... maybeQiBHom or another macuser will amble through hre and shed some light.

One thing I do remember correctly is that if you delete the elements needed for Aqua (the GUI interface) you won't start at all. So that kinda tells you how tightly integrated the GUI is with the system :(

Pretty close, says 33.8M/sec
Thanks for the linkage

That's freaking great! I do 23 with a 933. So your 500Mhz more CPU is giving you 10M/s more! I think that's closing in on Death's G5's numbers .. which is a killer comparison :|party|:

That's bang for the buck :)

There was a recent security update for the mac mini, and I applied it.
It appears it has reduced my output.

IB, I've applied all the security patches on my mini (minus the iPod updater-my iPod's plugged into a Win box) with no performance impact. What else is running? Are you doing some sort of media-server thing?

IronBits

That's good news ECL. No ipod running here either, just the client.
Just checked todays and it appears to be heading back towards normal...
2.90 T today
Hopefully it stays there ;)

Pay no attention to the moose behind the curtain :gone: ;)

IronBits,

1. Go to www.macupdate.com or www.versiontracker.com
2. Download Onyx or Cocktail and run it/them. I prefer Onyx and it's freeware.
3. See peformance climb back.

These apps will optimize your system (delete cache files, pre-bind, repair privelages, fix, snarkify and otherwise kickassify your system). Not to mention make it leaner, clean cache files and run CRON jobs in background.

4. See my OGR stats since yesterday BEEEEYYYYYAAAAATTTCCCHH....!!!!

LOL. That's all I got, so if you put another box on you'll pass me back up.

I'm thinking of upgrading to a Dual 1.7/1.8 G4 which would really blow your doors off, but I also have to move my household goods this month, so I doubt I'll be doing it. You get "spunky" with me again though and I'll have to think of some other way to Bitch Slap™ your ass.

/me to IB - "I'd love to help you out... which way did you come in???"

 Onyx is running. I left DNET running while it was doing it, hopefully it was smart enough to know that's what I want running to the max.

Nice boost your got!!! I hope for something similar ;)

You should be prompted to reboot afer Onyx runs. Run it before and after system updates to ensure you have a sane system

Onyx didn't give me the boost. I added a 1.6 Sempron I had on SOB.
