many of my machines are behind a wireless system, whose signal gets dropped a few times an hour (nothing i can do about it, i'm a ways away from the router, and there's no way of getting it closer/getting an antenna/wiring it up) and it seems that my DIMES output has dropped considerably ...

is this signal dropping messing me up ... does DIMES need constant access to the internet?

This project definitely needs a constant connection.

Perhaps you should think about getting a more powerful antenna (http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=wireless+router+antenna&hl=en&lr=&sa=N&tab=ff&oi=froogler) for your wireless router.

not to sound snarky .. but i thought i made it pretty clear that there were no ways in which i could improve my reception, including an antenna. I'm flat broke so anything that costs money is out of the question.

I had to look up the definition of snarky. LOL.

If you are not able to do anything about the connection, then unfortunately you're SOL.

But just in case you have about $10 bucks to spare, you might want to look at this (http://www.cat6cableguy.com/inc/pdetail?v=1&pid=107).

Good luck.

Even an old DTV antenna will help. Check with him... he's the master :)

I'd love to wire it directly, but that's no option either. There's no practical means of getting a cable from the router in the office to my room, at the other end of the building and 2 floors away.

I was just going to stick some old rabbit ears onto my wireless card (dlink extreme-g) but the connection isn't a stanard rabbit ears ttype connction, so I didn't really know what to do.

I dunno if you can mod that antenna, but here's a site I found from google that might help ya:

I think if you search the net a bit you can find a way to mod that pesky little antenna. Seems like you won't get a major increase, but from what I'm seeing from other sites you can spend $20 and mod the new antenna onto the card and get anywhere from 15-30ft more range so if you don't move that computer your reception should jump a little.
