i just switched from coyotelinux (http://www.coyotelinux.com) for my dsl router/firewall to a newer linux distro

clarkconnect (http://www.clarkconnect.org)
it is a little bit cooler/newer, has more features

i like it!! i think its australian ;)

time to retire this 486 dx4-100 :(

i'll see if i can reconfigure it , maybe someone over in the bargain bin will be able to use it for a new home LAN setup or something

a small disadvantage to coyote was that , because it runs off a floppy, there was no easy way to load a DC client (although i have seen posts saying people did it)

clarkconnect was really easy to load DC onto, so now my firewall is running on PII-300Mhz :D

sweet, I have been thinking about grabbing 1 to 3 p166 systems and running linux stuff on them, one of them being a router/gateway/firewall.

I had looked at both smoothwall and coyote, so another one to consider is always nice.

i tried smoothwall first, it has a really cool feature, it lets you setup a third NIC , for a DMZ (for servers)
but even though it says it works with PPPoE, it didn't work for me :(

if i switch to cable at some time, i will try smoothwall again

coyote has been solid, but no bells and whistles ;)

Astaro is also really a sweet firewall. I've been running it for about 8 months and I'm completely satisfied with it.

hmm, interesting, but wow! those hardware requirement are way up there!

Hardware Requirements

minimum:

Pentium Class > 300 MHz
64 MB RAM
4 GB IDE HD
CDROM IDE
2 PCI-NICs (for testing, 1 is enough)

recommended:

Pentium II Class > 400 MHz
128 MB RAM
8 GB SCSI/IDE HD
CDROM SCSI/IDE
3 PCI-NICs (Internet, Local Net, Demilitarized Zone

The stated requirements are quite overblown. I've got it running on a P2-266 (an old Dell OptiPlex GX1) with 64mb RAM and a 2gb IDE drive.

It's handling 250 users on a full T1 connection without any problem at all. ;)

You don't need 3 NICs, either. That's only if you want to run a DMZ network. Most people would only use two.

In addition to having Astaro firewalls at work, I'm running it at home with a LinkSys cable router and Road Runner cable access. It works great.
