So, basically you're buying a pair of 2.2GHz cpus for about $265 each, right? Yes, I realize that isn't TECHNICALLY true, but they are, in fact, 2 cpus on one chip.

Does anyone know the power drain on these things? Just from experience, I'd make a SWAG that a bang for buck analysis would make two separate 2.2GHz processors a better deal from a crunching standpoint. But of course, we're only a small sub-set of the market.

Anybody care to guess when these will be interesting to the average pharmer, cost-wise?

Cost wise, they are still extremely expensive. It would overall be cheaper by a fair amount, but the up front cost will be high. I think the prices quite a bit in a quarter or two.

I think those LV xeons, while hard to find, are still a better bet if you overclock them.

No, I don't think separate is a better deal. Remember that 2 machines are going to require 2 power supplies, 2 sets of RAM, 2 hard drives, 2 sets of cables, 2 motherboards, two Heat-Sinks, and two cases.

AMD processors aren't rated by Ghz, they are assigned a different rating - this one is rated 4400+. You are buying the equivalent of a pair of Athlon 64 4400+ chips at $265 each.

The current price of a single Athlon64 3500+ chip is $270 each.
The current price of a single Athlon64 4000+ chip is $473 each.

So, you are buying more performance with the single 4400+ dual core chip than if you bought yourself a pair of the Athlon 4000+ chips, and just buying the pair of 4000+ chips is going to cost you $946 - more than the entire dual-core system should cost to set up complete with RAM, HD and all the rest.

(Plus you're looking at needing to buy an additional motherboard, power supply, HSF, set of RAM and hard drive to run the two separate systems - and that's at least an extra $200-$250)

Cost of a setting up a pair of Athlon64 4000+ boxes - around $1500. Cost of setting up a single dual core Athlon64 4400+ box - about $750.

Anyone know a distributor that has them in yet? My sources are all pointing to an early July delivery date to maybe being pushed later at this point. One distributor has it pushed back as far as August. The major OEM's such as HP, IBM, and Alienware might be getting them a bit earlier.

Newegg say they have the 4600+ in stock...

gamepc.com and monarchcomputers also had them in stock I believe.

Also tigerdirect.com are advertising them, though I swung by their local store this morning on the offchance and they didn't have any :P

4600 and 4200 look to be in stock at some places. 4800 and 4400 look to be delayed. Monarch is listing them as shipping 7/6.

Of course I would want a 4800 or 4400.

I do an awful lot of compiling and running multiple apps at one time, so I'm really looking forward to these. I may order a 4600+ from New Egg next week...
