i'm looking for a way to protect a slaved hard drive(Windows machine) and i've heard it may be possible to do this by cutting a wire on the ide cable. anybody know if this is possible or know of any other methods to do this?

Open explore click on the drive you want read only
Select all the files and DIR in the root view
when there all highlighted click the FILE tab and click property's
when that window opens check Read Only and then click apply
A new window should pop up to ask if you want to apply this to this folder only
Or to all sub folders and files
Check all sub folders and files then hit OK
It might take a bit to work and might seem like it clocked up
but it has to mark all the files on the entire drive to read only
You should still able to right new files to the drive but you can not make
a change to any files that are in place now with a read only tag
if i can still write to the disk, i would'nt consider that protected completely. you're saying i can only attribute these read only settings to a file, not to the hardware itself?( a global setting)

I would use security permissions on the drive to protect it, this can be done in all flavours of business OSes and removes the need for hardware mods etc.
What is it you are protecting, and from whom?
tried that already. bios won't detect the drive on start up.
