    How To Get Started

Get the Client from distributed.net for your OS

    How-To guide here
    http://www.distributed.net/docs/tutor_netopt.php

Run it the first time and it will ask you some questions and create dnetc.ini
Then edit dnetc.ini (here is a copy of mine)

    [parameters]

    First-time participant step-by-step walkthrough

Firstly, you should make sure that the email address you entered in your client configuration is a real email address where you can effectively receive your personal stats password and where distributed.net staff can contact you if you were to be the lucky winner of one of our projects that offers a prize.
The second step is for you to run the client and wait until it flushes work units back to the distributed.net proxy network. Anywhere from 0 to 24 hours after your client first flushes some work units back to us, our stats server will detect that you are a new participant and start publishing stats about your work as well as your ranking on its web site.
You should then lookup your personal statistics on the stats server in order to view your personal stats page. If you are participating in the RC5-72 contest, for example, click on the 'RC5-72' link from the http://stats.distributed.net/ page. You will be directed to the http://stats.distributed.net/projects.php?project_id=8 page at the top of which you can enter your email address in the search field of the 'Participant Stats' column.
If you enter your full email address or if the search based on your query only returns one result, you will be directly directed to your personal stats page. If you entered a more generic keyword in the participant stats query form, you will be directed to a page listing the first 50 results that match your query. From there, you can click on a participant's name and you will be directed to the corresponding personal stats page.
Your personal stats page for one of our projects contains statistics related to your contribution to a that particular project. If you participate in multiple distributed.net projects, you will have as many project-specific personal stats pages as number of projects you are contributing to. The stats web site is broken down into various sections for each of our projects. Each section can be accessed from the links in the table listing our different projects on the http://stats.distributed.net/ page.
Finally, you will need to request that your stats password be sent to you by email to the address that you specified in your email client configuration, which is also the one under which you appear in the stats server. To do this, you must be on your (or one of your) personal stats page(s) and click on the link at the very bottom of that page that reads: "I cannot remember my password. Please email [insert your email address here]'s password.". Once you click on that link, you should receive an email with your stats password shortly thereafter.
Note: Your stats password will not be automatically mailed to when you first flush work units back to our servers. You must necessarily follow the procedure described in the previous paragraph to request your password.

    Lauren,

You have to flush a few dnet wu's. Then you will get into the stats.

Depends on how you set up the client....but by default you'll have to wait until the client finishes 25 wu's.

    Yes.

    Here's my dnet.ini content:

    [parameters]
    id=******@*****

    [triggers]
    restart-on-config-file-change=yes
    pause-on-no-mains-power=no
    pause-flag-filename=pause
    pause-watch-plist=

    [display]
    progress-indicator=auto-sense
    detached=no

    [ogr-p2]
    fetch-workunit-threshold=1000

    [misc]
    project-priority=OGR-P2,RC5-72=0

    [buffers]
    frequent-threshold-checks=1
Use something like that. You'll get, on every machine, the buffer full with 1000 units. Just copy and paste.

    I sent in this
    [Jun 07 22:27:23 UTC] Connected to us.v29.distributed.net:2064...
[Jun 07 22:27:24 UTC] The keyserver says: "Hai c0w! (cdy)"
[Jun 07 22:27:24 UTC] Refreshed project state data from server. (cached)
[Jun 07 22:27:27 UTC] RC5-72: Sent 48 packets (48.00 stats units) to server.
[Jun 07 22:27:28 UTC] OGR-P2: Sent 5 packets (209.77 stats units) to server.

    No... this forces OGR 1st
    [misc]
    project-priority=RC5-72=0, OGR-P2=1

    This forces RC5 1st
    [misc]
    project-priority=OGR-P2=0,RC5-72=1

This lets if figure out itself what it wants to do
    [misc]
    project-priority=OGR-P2,RC5-72
    or
    [misc]
    project-priority=OGR-P2=1,RC5-72=1

Look in the DNET OGR threads on this forum...

Sounds real good for DC Pharmers IB But I am a real
slow learner when it comes to using new programs.
It has taken me years to get use to using VNC.
And it is one of the reasons I don't use Linux

I am sure you have seen me ask some pretty
dumb Questions about the soft wear or OS I installed at times.
To this day I still do not fully understand the word permission and how or why it is used

I think it might be because I am dyslectic, and the words and patterns get confused in my head

rscc is the reason for my quick ramp up in production. Never felt like remote desktoping into all the machines at work and setting them up. With this puppy I was able to install DNET on another 15 computers or so in about 10 minutes.

So you guys need a little help in OGR and DPAD hasn't been making people happy lately so I might as well put a little power toward. It has been ages since I have run the DNET client but it used to be good at no-net.

For OGR, what is the best way to run no-net, set up the client on an Internet machine and set it to download a lot of WUs and then copy everything to the no-net machine or are there only certain files I need to copy back and forth?

buff-in.ogf should be all you need.

Since stub size is mostly unknown, you need to over-estimate your cache to avoid wasted cycles. I wouldn't risk less than 300-500 stubs per day on any dual core CPU.

    The way I do it

is change the line in dnetc.ini under networking to disabled=yes and frequent-threshhold-cehcks=0 after pulling down 1000 wus which seems to be the max.

What you can do if you need to leave it for longer is to move the buff-in.ogf to a sub folder and then use dnetc.exe -import to increase the buffer size after pulling down a second set of 1000 wus.

2000 should last a week then produce a nice
Alas poor Borg, I knew it Horatio

Running the client as a Win9x/WinNT/2000/XP Service

A Win9x/WinNT/2000/XP service is a process that starts running when the computer is powered up, and does not stop until the computer is powered down. Unlike normal processes, services will continue to run even when a user logs out.

Obviously, a service does not have access to remote file and disk resources that require a user to log in first. (This restriction can be nullified on NT - see FAQ below)

To install the client as a service, run the client with the -install switch. This will cause it to register itself with the service handler, which will in turn automatically start the client the next time the computer is powered up. To deinstall a client previously installed as a service, start it with the -uninstall switch.

    FAQ

Q: When installed as a service, the client cannot access files on remote drives (network shares). How come?
A: When installed as a service, the client is (on NT, by default) not running in a user's context (there isn't a user logged in). Under Win9x, where security is virtually non-existant, the client *could* theoretically access network shares /once/ a user has logged in, but that is obviously not a good idea . On NT, the service can be configured from the service manager to start in a context other than the default "Local System": Control Panel -> services -> properties on service. there's a radio button to change between local system and another account. Also if the machine is a backup domain controller, all control panel choices for service userids/passwords, other than localuser, are grayed out whenever the machine doesn't have a connection to the primary domain controller.

Q: On NT, trying to -install as service from 'AT' fails, but works fine otherwise. Whats up with that?
A: AT runs by default in a non-desktop context, and the client's "have a valid shell" check fails. The solution is to check 'interact with desktop' in the scheduler config and install the service with "-quiet -install".

    I don't know what RSCC is ...

    Edit dnetc.ini for your site.

Copy the two files dnetc.exe and dnetc.ini to a folder on the remote computer. like c:\dcprojects\dnetc
You should share c:\dcprojects as dcprojects on every computer to make this easy.
Then VNC to that computer and start dnetc.exe

    Done.
Now, if you have dcprojects shared on every computer, you can use a batch file to do the hard work.
if not exist \\remotecomputername\dcprojects\dnetc mkdir dnetc
    copy dnetc.exe \\remotecomputername\dcprojects\dnetc
    copy dnetc.ini \\remotecomputername\dcprojects\dnetc

    CN = computernames
    @echo off
    for %%i in (CN1, CN2, CN3, CN4, CN5 CN6 CN7 CN8 CN9 CN10 CN11) do goto :DOIT %%i

    goto :END

    Closing them down

11 days to Team Warped and 70-80 days to Distributed Amiga.

That would be 4th place in te bag before the project ends.

Pretty decent result in my opinion only The Cows, the whole of Russia and Ars Pimpaholica ahead of us.

As ever we are punching well above our numbers.

Major respect to all our crunchers both old and present
Alas poor Borg, I knew it Horatio
