i posted this a couple days ago, but the thread was already dead, so apparently nobody read it. and maybe all this has been said before and i wasnt paying attention. but disclaimers aside...

For those that aren't aware, there's been printing of T-shirts and other wearable FDC paraphernalia in the FAD forum, which got me thinking about this, but even regardless of that, if we are going to be effectively "advertising" free-dc in this way, (or even for other recruiting/info purposes, really), our home page should be a little more newbie-friendly (especially since most of us probably don't use it and come straight to the forums anyway)... really i think there's 2 classes of people who we should care about.

1. someone who sees the t-shirt and says "hey, my computer can help cure cancer?" and goes to our site, not really knowing anything about DC in general, free-dc in particular, or any projects specifically. they will need to know "what is DC", "how do i do it" and "what is free-dc". ideally it should be really easy to find answers to these questions within one click of the home page.

right now the home-page shows forum threads and news (which makes sense given the forum-centric nature of the community) but isnt terribly inviting to someone with a short attention span, not much knowledge of DC, and not enough interest (yet) to dig deeper.
i think there should be an answer to the question "what is DC, and how can my computer help cure disease, advance science, or maybe even win me some prize money?"
there is an "about" link at the top, and in fact it does answer these questions... but i think it should be more distinguished from the rest of the links, though, so as to be obvious to someone new that they should click there. another suggestion is to maybe add a heading that says "what is distributed computing" or something to the section that answers that question.

and of course, the "what is free-dc" answer will hopefully get these folks involved here, and also be useful for the second of the aformentioned 2 classes of people: those who may have found out about a specific project somehow else, but have no team, and they hear of this free-dc team that does cool stuff. that was me a few years back, and the state of the site was basically the same... i had to wander my way into the forums before i found out anything substantive. forums are great for connecting people, but terrible for actual dissemination of information, IMO, due to their organization and difficulty of searching.

oh, and one more nit to pick... why is the default content height so small?
on the whole though, i like the design, it can just benefit from a little tweaking.

This is a good idea, who will step up to the plate and write it?
This has always been the bane of Free-DC...
We get a lot of great ideas, but no one has the time or skills to do it.

Maybe this time Free-DC has some web designers and folks with l33t skills with time to jump in and lend a hand...

Agreed, sounds like a great idea.

BTW, I'm going to print up a Free-DC shirt for myself at iPrint.com since I'm not part of the FaD fad. ;) It's just going to be a basic logo with the web address. Seeing those FaD shirts made me want to do something. If they turn out well I'll post a picture of them to see if anyone else wants one. I've done ~10 different video game shirts with them over the past few years and they do a decent job and are relatively cheap.

What about writing a Free-DC anthem?
If Free-DC is an international team why not have an international forum?

I don't see much need for an international forum.....that would just make it seem like FreeDC splits the team into two (international and not). The structure of the forums, seems great to me. Now maybe what you really want is a non-english forum?

Yes. It is usually called as international forum.

If I wore a Free-DC shirt, it would be because;

1) It was black.
2) It had a cool design.
3) It was representative of Free-DC (translation, included all the projects we do, not just one).

My friends would simply shake their heads, and assume I had yet another weird, geeky shirt, and not ask what it meant.

Strangers would ignore it (although the number of comments I get from total strangers when I'm wearing my Firefox t-shirt is rather astounding, the weirdest being that plumber in the hotel elevator when I forgot what I was wearing...).

This isn't to say I object to re-doing the index page. I seldom go there. I got to Free-DC through participating in a project, and being impressed by the comments and actions of Free-DC members. That, I think, is our best and surest PR.

But, cool, black t-shirts are always appreciated.

Oh, and the idea of calling a non-English forum an "International Forum" really rubs me the wrong way. First off, English is an international language. It is an official language in Canada, India, Great Britain and several Carribbean countries (it isn't in the US, amusingly enough, since we don't have any official languages, despite the nutters). It is spoken in a lot of other countries, officially or not, natively or not.

Secondly, the formulation that 'English /= international" is not only false, but smacks of euphamism. It is certainly better than "foreign language forum" (which I've seen, and is really offensive), but what on earth is wrong with "Non-English forum"?

Makes me want to post in Latin, or Old English, all of this does...

My 2 cents, for what it's worth.....

Why don't we start a WIKI entry?????
That way, we can all work on the project and no one will have to do all the work. We can just start an entry at wikipedia.org. Once it is up and looking good, one of the administrators here could put a link to our wiki page on free-dc's homepage.
That might be helpful and an easy way to get this done????

P.S. I LOVE black t-shirts....
Ran into an old friend a while back, he said he wasn't sure it was me, but figured it was because I was wearing a black t-shirt and jeans! lol! Yep, my uniform of choice. Now switching to black sweatshirts as the temps drop...

I was bored so I started an entry. I hope no one minds.

I was thinking that something about the stats page and also the hosted forums we have could also be added along with many other things.

BTW, who owns the Free-DC logo (points to the top left corner of the page)? If it is public domain, we can update it to reflect that on wikipedia.

I think it's a great idea personally :)

I guess Dyyryath would own the logo

When you click on the link "distributed computing" in the Wiki, you get:

"In computer science, distributed computing studies the coordinated use of physically distributed computers."

I'm not going to try to edit it myself, but it is definitely wrong. I can kind of understand what the person was getting at, but I think the sentence structure is corrupted, in that you could probably rearrange the words to get the right definition.

I created the logo (and all of the various previous incarnations as well :) ), but they are, as far as I'm concerned, the property of the Free-DC community and so long as they are used in way that benefits Free-DC, they may be used in whatever fashion our members desire.

As for the home page, well, it's honestly a half-finished project. I've got a habit of getting started on things and then getting caught up doing other things before I get finished. :spank:

If the consensus here is for site design changes, I'd be happy to set aside some time to make them provided we take small, specific steps that I can do one sitting at a time. :D
