Decided to switch a few machines around.

I had my main windows machine as a P4 3.0 for some time and it was starting to creak, so I decided to switch out the mobo, cpu, video card and put in the 4200+ on A8N Sli with a Radeon X880 (as the tower it is in is my best case and I have 750Gb or so attached to it)

At the same time I wanted to switch out the 24pin PSU for one on one my other 3800+ machines.

So, switched PSU's first, the PSU I've put in the 3800+ has the 4pin a little short so it does not reach. That machine is offline till I pick up a new PSU :(

Switched out the components and booted up the P4, booted then froze. Tried about 20 times and only once I got a POST before it crashed. Unhooked everything and reconnected, repasted the CPU, still no go :( Gave up on that for now. Will try another CPU later I suppose.

On to the 4200+, got it all set up after about 5 hours, but I cannot seem to run it with more than one memory stick. Does not POST no matter which slots I use. Tried a few different types of memory, Corsair & Mushkin, doesn't seem to matter. Will only POST with a single stick in B1.

Bah, PC's

Hang in there mate.

I also had to rebuild my gaming box as it was being flaky. Now, it has become a pile of loose parts as it won't boot up after some hardware swap.

Sometimes, I just want to throw that damn puter out the window. :trash:

Ah damn... :(

Take a break... take a few days even... and hopefully things will go better next time you take a look.

Picked up another PSU and got the other 3800+ running again, also picked up a 1Gb stick of Ram so even if I can't get two sticks to work, 1Gb will be enough for now....Now I've got 8 sticks of 512Mb Ram laying on my desk though :)

I think the P4 might be shorting out on the case somehow. I'll take it out tonight and see if that fixes it.

Learnt from bitter experience.

Bare board first, then bolt it in after it shows working.
If that don`t work, go away and have a break. Maybe leave it till tomorrow when you`ll see instantly the little thing that`s stopping it.

My fav used to be Abit boards which, for some reason, wouldn`t run unless you put a couple fibre washers on the 2 screws next the memory sticks. No real clearance problem, just proximity to traces for some reason. Used to cause some weird problems.

Personally, I sometimes think boards just don`t like being disturbed so throw an earth loop as a way to punish you. :bang:

Hmm yeah either washered screws near the mem sticks or shame you can't get little plastic screws that would do the same job or better yet.. use the plastic posts near memory...
Hmm yeah tracing a path from part A to B aint' easy I've tried it with a few porgrams just to see what is possible drove me NUTS doing it by hand.
Bok hope ya get it up and running could be something really silly like a bios tweak or jumper.
