View Full Version : So what is everyone gonna go for after FAD

I dunno what I'm gonna do probably DPAD for a while.

What's a nice stealthy project?

I just need to find one compatible with proxies.

I think those who don't know what to do after FaD should come hitup RieselSieve for awhile. Maefly is currently annihilating the stats for himself and Free-DC. He's managed to get into the top 10 with his massive computing power. Free-DC is in 5th place now (mostly because of him) and it won't be long until we're in 3rd place. After that it's a 33 million point climb (around 4 months at our current pace) until 2nd and another 11 million over that (another 2-3 months) until first! I think that if some of our computing beasts here would like to throw some of their firepower over there it would take less than half the time now!

If nothing else we could have a New Year's Riesel Sieve Gauntlet! The FaD project ends in December for good. After that there would be a (roughly) 2 week time period for everyone to get all their FaD boxen offline and switched to Riesel Sieve LLR.

So who's up for it? Fozzinator, I know you're the master at organizing the Gauntlets and Bok is the Stats Whiz for'em. Can we get some support for a New Year's Riesel Sieve Gauntlet?!

:fireboun: Get some fire under dem buns! :fireboun:

Oh, time length. The Gauntlet would officially begin January 1, 2006 at 00:00 EST. The Gauntlet would then last roughly 2 weeks to 1 month (depending on those who are willing to join up). I figure a good 20-30 million points could be raised in that time period if we can convince PY 222 and LAURENU2 to go all out for us too!

Probably Rosetta@Home until I get tired of it.

Don`t really want to put Boinc on the boxes but maybe Rosetta or Climate cos I like projects with some use.

I just wish somebody would come up with a project that provides immediate or soon benefits to medicine or similar that would really justify the expense of running multiple computers as I`m now looking at cost versus waste of resources, which is one of the reasons I regret running Seti though it did actually get the world into DC awareness by setting up the groundwork and is continuing to innovate on that level.

Maths projects as a whole leave me cold unless they have a benefit I haven`t seen yet and certainly the brute force code cracking ones I did participate in seem an utter waste now.

Oh well  more research and reading up to do.:sleepy:

Eon and maybe Climate Prediction. I'm with Shish as to motives. For me, it's got to be something beneficial to science and something that the admins can keep running (something of a challenge for Eon, but hey).

Might even try going back to Folding At Home, if it's still running, but that's a stretch. Heh, haven't done that since Free-DC was started! :p

Yeah, I was also thinking about F@H again but they want too much of your system to get decent scores and I like to be able to use my system for other things.

Really! Well OK then, Climate Prediction for my one remaining moderate-big system and Eon for the little boxen. Thanks for the tip, Shish!

There are no guarantees that ANY project will have immediate benefits, BUUUUUUT...

Have you thought about Distributed Hardware Evolution Project? They've had proven results. I think Bok is in charge of the server, but with the baby and all he's been busy, so it hasn't been running. If I had the skills and hardware, I'd be running it myself, but unfortunately, for every 20 people that are willing to do something difficult, you're lucky to find one that can do it at all.

You guys should try F@H. It's one of the most productive DC projects in terms of papers published based on the research.

They've just updated their Disease studied (http://folding.stanford.edu/FAQ-diseases.html) page, with members of the project presenting their work at various universities and conferences.

It seems to me that since FAD results arent being actively used that our only remaining FAD purpose is to keep DPC behind us.

The stats say that DPC daily avg is currently 1.3 million. They are 150 million behind us. There are 38 days remaining. We certainly don't need to be outproducing them!

I think we can take some chips off the table immediately and then monitor DPC activity. I'm gonna take this op to get my pxe nodes up to debian etch @2.6.12 then I'll start with Rosetta and perhaps toss in some WCG. :;

Well I run 2 Setiqueue servers 24/7/365, and they got a 10Mb/500Kb fast link so if a server is needed I can do that, particularly as Seti I might just get to be finished sooner rather than later.
Should I look into it?
Plenty hard drive space as I got a spare raid array just now with 4x120Gb on Raid5, just doing a verify now after cleanup. LMK. And I`ve more than enough time to set it and fettle it if necessary.

I`ve done F@H and I just don`t like their idea of if you want max points you practically have to let them takeover your machine.

Maybe Rosetta for now once I get over my aversion to Boinc. Doesn`t feel right after being tangled with Berzerxly since Seti started. I may put a machine on Climate cos I owe someone and did promise to help out.

You'll never know what the Cows will do. They might be storing up for one of their megaflushes at the end of the project.

I'll keep the entire fleet on FaD for now to keep our lead longer, just in case.

I know...we need Commodore 64's...lots of them..

I figured a few billion of those babies and we can finish FaD in first place...

I'm glad no one has suggested what happened on DF when it was ending. Some dude has his teammates crunching for him in his name to get his final position up higher..

ERRRHMMM....

I`ve got 4 still and an Amstrad PPC portable.....:rotfl:

Dunno whether to stop FAD now or wait a month.
Prolly gonna go to Rosetta and see how it`s going as we seem to have more interest in that than Climate.

Just found the AMD 165 dual Optie which has solved both my price and 2x1meg cache problem and I`m putting in a pre-order now. Same price as the x2 3800 and a magic clocker apparently but 80Amps on the rail....jeeeeeezzzzzussss.
