I stuck the client on one machine at the house just to see how it behaved. However, it seems to spend an awful lot of time with nothing to work on. Am I missing something?

Go back to the Boinc website, login, change your preferences to maintain ~2 days worth of work and you should be good to go.
If it's on Linux, Bok, maybe PCZ say you should make Rosetta stay in memory.
Put some more boxen on it! :D
If you have at least one windows box, you can use Boincview to keep an eye on all of them, linux or otherwise...

Yes, go to the webiste and check your general preferences. In particular make sure 'Do work while computer is in use?' is set to yes..

Oh, and make sure you use an optimized boinc client... see the sticky for notes on that..I think you'd probably be better off compiling your own, so follow the instructions at the site I listed :)
