View Full Version : Opteron on standart S939 MB?

My brother is thinking about getting a new computer (he is tired of his P4 2.66Ghz being beaten by my Xp3200 :D )

Since the Opterons have 1Meg of cache and are supposed to overclock really nice, they might be an alternative for a normal A64.

Only Question: On which motherboards will theey run on. i mean boards with standard ram which are usually A64only. And Opterons and registered ram is quite costly...

Any ideas?

The S939 Opterons use regular DDR RAM, so you don't need to buy registered/ECC RAM for it. From the brief amount I have read on them, most S939 motherboards that support Dual Core should support them. I know Jeff recently ordered one and has tested it out...

I just put one together yesterday on one of the new Asus A8N-VM boards (on board video) - recognized the opteron straight off, overclocked it to it's max, which is kinda disappointing as the board only goes up to 240FSB. Nice board otherwise, but I'll swap the opty out and put in an x2 in that one, put the opty in an Epox board today I think.

So, conclusion is, yes they'll pretty much run in any socket 939 board.

Don't know if you're using Windows or not Bok but give ClockGen a try if you are. You should be able to push it higher than 240 assuming you fool around with memory settings and voltages.

Clockgen refuses to run for some reason...

:swear:

I thought it was standard nForce4, but perhaps that combination and the onboard graphics is causing some issues.

Actually probably becuase it's an nForce 410 ??

Yes... you are right. :( I forgot about that onboard video messing around with the chipset. Did the board come with any overclocking software? I know you probably looked already but just in case you didn't, have a looksee.

it didn't :(

I'm going to put my 4200+ in this board, should be able to get a good overclock still with it having a 11x multi, then put the opteron in an Asus A8N-Sli ...

I might give it a go, not sure if it will support this chipset either.

Well, I borrowed a 165 to test my MSI board but wasn`t allowed to mess with it too much.
However, I`m amazed it went right up to 2710Mhz on the standard heatsink and just a bit more volts on an NF3 almost straight away and so easy. Got to be a flyer with water cool and god knows what it would do with a pelt in it. Ran a bit of heavy benching on it but just for an hour and it never flickered apart from getting a bit warm (60C with standard stupid 70mm fan but dropped off 5C when I stood a 120mm close to it so a good TR 120mm SI will look after mine I guess).
Gotta get me some of these.
Unfortunately this one`s gone into a mates board for gaming (think he`s an Eve online man) and he`s waited a month for it now so I couldn`t do much more with it as he was breathing down my neck and looking a bit worried. He`s gonna let it settle before we wind it up but doesn`t want to remove the retail sink.
Silly boy, I`ll have to edumacate him more proper.:D

Just got a new version of clockgen from the cpuid guys which works on this board. I've got a 3800+ in it right now, but it struggles to go over 240 FSB still. It might be because I can't change the HTT option down at all. I do not see anything in the BIOS which resembles this!

On another note, I put mu new opteron 170 into an nForce3 board and jumped it straight to 2.5Ghz with no issues at all. Temps are good, though I think I didn't apply the AS5 too well as they are at 49C. Will try more later..

darn! i had my eyes on a .venus 148 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/CustratingReview.asp?item=N82E16819103596) . looks (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=28250) they are out of production. newegg still has them and i've seen the price rise a couple times past couple weeks. i was hoping they would last till january.

guess it's back to my original plan of waiting for the m2, plus a few months for m2 price to drop.
